Sticking to a new game: why is so hard?

Category: MMO Ranting Game: Default Posted on Jun 24, 2009 8:27 am

Well, since the past year I’ve been looking for a MMO to settle and dedicate my gaming attention. This came since I’ve stopped with Ragnarok Online by the time I started attending college and when I returned I found out that my guild had disbanded and my friends had moved to other games, so I lost my motivation to keep playing RO. That was probably the worst thing that happened, since most of my friends are now distributed among five or six games (and I didn’t like any of them).

I’ve had, since then, tried to find a game that could suit my tastes with fast paced action, high customization and a not so tiring grinding (since I don’t have that much time to dedicate to MMOs anymore). That has been a hard thing to do, not much for the grinding since even if it’s too much I’m somewhat used to it, but all the games by now seem to have full of pretty animations for the attacks – that slows combat a lot – and the new trend among developers seem to limit my freedom of choice by cutting down my class choice by race and faction. C’mon people, if D&D got rid of that stupid rule and everyone praised it, why are you guys doing that on my online games?

So far, three games got nearly the line of getting me hooked:

Holic Online was nearly everything I asked, it was only lacking faction battles and PvP, and that was about to come with the Holic 2 Expansion… then English-language Holic … Ok, there’s Latin American Holic 2, and I can speak both Spanish and Portuguese, but I won’t go with all the trouble of making my characters again and grinding all the way to a high level again, aside from that, most of the friends I made playing the game were in northern Europe so they won’t understand nothing of the game, that was goodbye Holic for me.

Sword of the World has a been a solitary grinding journey, and while I enjoy the game a lot, I need the time I don’t have to keep grinding and evolving my characters according, I just dislike leaving them AFK grinding. I can’t hope but feel like not logging in the game when I only have like two hours to play, since I know I’ll most likely be online by four or five hours and be sleepy during the classes next day. And also, there’s also the problem that people on low levels rarely interact, maybe this is the let down of MCC-system.

Shin Megami Tensei: IMAGINE… man, Megaten has been my favorite gaming franchise for a long time, the games of all the series never let me down, and the MMO is awesome, it even has a noticeable storyline (!) – that’s something it has to be praised for – that it’s somewhat loosely connected to the early games of the series (thanks Aeon-Genesis to let my play this SNES gem in a language I understand) but, it all comes down to thing that it’s hard as hell, just like in the console games, and you know, I prefer to spend my time trying to complete my third NOCTURNE run on my PS2 and trying to see the finals of all the paths than playing it online… maybe once I finish it I’d like to keep playing it online, but not now.

So, now I ask, why it’s so hard to find a game to get you hooked? Maybe, it’s because you have lots of other things to do that take away time that could get you involved with the game, or maybe, it’s because since you’ve had a good experience with a MMO in the past you expect the new game to have things that you enjoyed in the game you played previously?

I don’t know, I don’t believe in the thesis that quality is dropping today, such poor supported games rarely survive in the market today, just look how Age of Conan is sinking and what happened to Tabula Rasa, and hell, I have to admit that Netgame support was becoming crappier each day and became just a shadow of it was in the early days of Holic. I believe it becomes more related to attachment to the people that play with you.

So far, Holy Beast, Neo Steam, Perfect World Shaya and Cabal weren’t my king of game, they let me down in many aspects, and RF online, I have to admit that I was pretty intimidated by the chatting on global channel, maybe I should give it a second chance.

Anyway, my vacations are coming so I’ll be able to try new games; Fiesta Online and Jade Dynasty are waiting for me. And about you who are reading this, do you also find hard to staying with a new MMO? What are you planning to try next and why?

My best regards and have fun!

"I'll keep my journey until I find it...

Wow ya i had somthing really outstanding to say about your Blog but by the time i get to the bottom to leave the message i seen to forgotten itLOL flash back humor... i dont have the problem of sticking to a game cause i got addicted to the first one i played PKO and when i did get a lil bored I search around and found Rappelz AND I LUV IT TOO... i only had to try out two other games between pko and Rappelz.

ive been with PKO since the beta years ago and with rappelz almost a year now

That's great you didn't have problem finding your game and staying with it! I seem to be sticking with one, I'm just waiting to see if I'll really stay playing it and I'll most likely make a post about it.

I suffer from depression and anxiety, I wondered wether my lack of an attention span was something to do with that????

I've had the same problem, the F2P games seem to be grindfests, P2P have abit more content to keep from repetativness, I'm in the new beta for DDO unlimited, thats like a good blend of F2P and P2P.

only game I've stuck with since release is LOTRO, tried practically everything else, some games like AOC and WAR I've enjoyed alot but after a couple of months they lose thier appeal, maybe I have a poor attention span.

Seizaku replied at 7:45 am Jul 03,2009
Then poor attention span seems to be a chronic disease among MMO players since from the feedback I received it seems that nearly everyone rarely can stick with a game for too long.

I was a little over whelmed with RF Online as well, I gave it a second chance and I was glad I did. But they now give out overpowered items that kinda ruined the game for me. Currently going through the gameslist. Gonna try Anarchy Online.

Yeah, I know, all the pressure to level fast to become useful to your race in Chip War and all... but if you're enjoying it then fine =)

And then my friend gets mad with me coz I "can't stay and play a single game, damnit!". Well, i've played LOTS of game online, and it seems like Graphics are enemies for Gameplay. Not that all fugly games r great or otherwise, but hey, i can't stand playing the nowadays "3D" games (Lineage II, Cabal, Holic, Granado Espada, and so on), they all get boring after a week or so. I been playing Trickster for some time now (since the beta, i may say), but it goes like play 6 months, only chat for 1~2 months, give it a break for the rest of the year and come back to play after this time. that and the fact all my friends there went *poof*. I never made a friend in Shayia, and Mu is quite boring. 9Dragons seemed nice, but no friends there either.

Well, seems more like i need new friends to find new games...

Seizaku replied at 2:50 pm Jun 29,2009
Well, I hope you find friends to join you in your gaming sessions, there's nothing better than playing with friends.

Im also searching a game to stay on. Guild Wars is awesome, probably the best MMO i played so far, but im kinda tired of it and i havent played it for a long time. These days i tried PW, Cabal, Archlord and Jade Dynasty, but i quit it fast. I think i played Archlord less than 10 minutes. I will continue my search too, and i hope you will inform us when you find a game that hooked u up.

WOW... your like .... exactly like me.

I mean RO was the epitome of MMO for me. Back in the day me and my friends were bent on finding the best RO server to play. We'll play a fun server (mid-high rates) with lots of event until it got closed, and then we'd move on. After like a year of that I guess they quit, and RO was dying off since nobody I knew was playing it.

Went onto RO2 (YEAH KOREAN BETA LOL!) and was deepy disapointed... It was bad, but it was so different from the original that it almost seemed like a WoW remake. I felt so bad and quit after getting to lvl 12... I hope that one dfay maybe it'll be worth trying again.

I have tried SMT:Imagine online too, I was in closed beta, and I got an awesome demon phoenix...  I was happy too, but a stupid quest were you send your demon into a cave to retreive something and receive a bonus of 50k exp KILLED IT... forever! I might have continued playing the game if my phoenix were still there... (I read on the forums any demon over lvl 15 had a 90% chance of success... my phoenix was lvl 20)

Holic got grindy as hell... so same thing happened... I quit.

I'm currently playing S4 League, but I lag to a lot of people, and they lag to me, so its not that fun.

Seizaku replied at 10:53 am Jun 28,2009
Did you register your phoenix at the catedral? O_o I guess you could get him back by paying the summoning fee, but I'm not sure...

I'm not one to leave comments because they are never read unless I put something funny in it, anyway sticking to a game is more of the people you meet along the way. If the game doesn't have a friendly community, you'll probably get bored. I figure if the game is decent and you meet a few people along the way of your first few grind sessions it might make it worth while. Honestly though out of every game I've played I think Pirate King Online/Tales of Pirates is easily the best PVP actions ever.

Seizaku replied at 7:34 am Jun 28,2009
I agree, as comradebran said, playing with nice people to vent and joke makes the gaming enviroment more enjoyable.

Here's a tip, TRY EVERYTHING! finding the perfect game for you is going to be a long road and an expensive one too.  Anyways, maybe a P2P mmorpg would be suit you (aaargh, I hate admitting to P2P games). Hope you find your match ;)

As for me, I'm having trouble getting into any mmorpg, but the clans, friends, and ongoing parties kept me coming back.

Oh yeah, before you can find your perfect game, you must know what you're looking for, if you are looking for pet-based mmorpg, then look at ether saga or eudemons (<<lame, lol). If not, find the clique of games that you are interested in and try all aspects of it. For me, I would say I enjoy adventure and story based mmorpgs with a bit of PVP. However you conclude, what you are looking for should be kept in mind. GL

Seizaku replied at 5:29 pm Jun 27,2009
I don't discard P2P, the only problem by now is that the only P2P I'm somewhat interested, Final Fantasy XI, has about 4 expansions sets (that means expending a lot of money beside the monthly fees) and has a sequel announced for the next year, so I'd rather wait for Final Fantasy XIV e Blade and Soul for trying them. Thanks for the advice.

find myself playing Luna more and more though, atleast its a game to play till FFXIV comes out, and it is pretty fun.

I've had a similar experience, but with maple story (yes, maple story...)

I played ms for about 3 years or so and spent hundreds on dollars on it.  It just got too boring and grindy for me, and I left.

After that, i tried dozens of games, RO, RFO, Cabal, WoW, Holic, you name it.  I never stuck with any of those for more than a month.  I was about to give up MMO's until i was invited for the CBT for megaten (SMT online).  I was instantly hooked and i sorta found the controls and everything easy to learn.  Anyways, Im with a great clan and though i ran out of story quests a long time ago, doing runs with clannies is probably what keeps me going...that and the fact that we have vent and we crack jokes every minute.

Seizaku replied at 7:41 am Jun 27,2009
You see, that's why I play MMOs, for the community. If you have a nice community and join a clan or something like that is the guarantee that you'll play a game for a long time.

Secret is to Never PLay WoW or GW. that way ur expectations will remain low and undisturbed... if u need a  gaming buddy let me know...  im a concieted successor that loves competition..

Seizaku replied at 7:45 am Jun 27,2009
I get your point, but at the same time you may miss the oportunity to play great games and keep having bad game experience. And I may sound a bit heretic but WoW didn't lived up to my expectation xD, kids on the voice chat broke the game for me.

Welcome to the club... I played tales of pirates  for 2 years and i think its good... and have been trying to find a good game to find after that.... (i quited ToP 2 years ago becuz the lack of events and becuz my friend quited the game 1 year before me and the guild i was in got dismissed by admins) The best game i have found by this far is AQ worlds and i think i will test Dragon nestand C9...  C9 looks non grind game! I also hate grinding!

Maplestory pales in comparison to Dragonica. Dragonica is a bit more hands-on and action oriented, meaning faster-paced.

But yeah, RO is insane grind, and that is just excessive, imo. Good grind is more like Guild Wars, and that's what I prefer, if any. I'm familiar with Perfect World, though I didn't much care for anything beyond character creation, because even after all that extensive facial work you end up looking exactly like a great deal of other players, cash shop or no. Customization extends beyond the inital and beyond the pre-defined outfits, and a lot of games just don't take the time to do a proper job of it all.

Seizaku replied at 9:25 am Jun 26,2009
I agree, but there's always a limit right? I know you can't cram all the possible ways of customization for a player to make a character in all possible ways (because those are infinite possibilities), but if finding someone looking exactly like my character is a funny surprise instead of a unpleasant routine (looking at you Shaya...), then a game has good customization for me.

I think most people have the same problem since there's so many games out there, which is also good since you'll definately find a game that you like...somewhere.

i notice you've only listed mmorpgs, maybe you should try out some other genres? like shooters etc (s4 league is a nice game that doesnt require lvls etc)

Dragonica is a good game too, if you're looking for rpgs with an action element in them, and also has a nice storyline (surprisingly)

Seizaku replied at 8:59 am Jun 26,2009
I actually played Crossfire and Operation 7, but I don't like playing MMOFPS for anything else than casual play. RPGs are more for long term playing time.

Hello there Seizaku! Now there is a reason why you, me and everyone changes f2p games like changing cloths. But in the end, everytime, say I, would think that the game I'm playing doesn't suit me and I would go on a journey for finding the best game that I would like to play forever or for a long period of time. But actually I would end up trying and deleting or leaving mmos in my computer, and ended up getting nowhere because of concentrating to find the games of my dreams instead getting a to a high level in one game resulting a waste of time ! >.< But actually the habit of changing games is so natural because you won't know how to control it  and you would end up changing games again and again and again although you try not to.

So anyway, what is the solution? The answer is a torture and is the same. If you want to be good in one game or two, stick with them. I don't know how you will do it, people has their own way to motivate themselves. if I explain all my method, you might think I'm crazy! But I tell you how i can reach either an average level or a fairly high level, I won't go to level cap cuz I too has the addiction of changing games whether the game is good or terrible.

Anyway, I do not motivate myself positively, I tried to reason to myself b4 positively to stay in one game but it all failed miserably in one day or two. So whenever I played a game too long, we usually feel tired and bored, but I continuously play the same game, feeling that grey matter surrounding the core of my brain is dying, and I feel "depressed"(not in serious mentally depressed just normal, tired and sad depressed), because I absolutely know if I am in the jolly mood or even normal I will definity f'ng change the mmo I'm playing.

So in the end, this emo-way is somewhat the only method to stop changing games, for me. And there might be a change to stop changing games if you try it. That's what happen to no-lifers of the mmos. I us

Seizaku replied at 9:12 am Jun 26,2009
If I do that I'll change game everyday o_o I dunno, but I'm more of the disciplined kind of person, I don't have such problems concentrating and all, but if something fails to catch my attention even if I gave the chance and the benefit of the doubt, I'll most likely leave and look for something else. But if that's work for you, then good to you =] oh, and martial arts are a good exercise, that's what I liked doing to exercise myself and plan to return until the end of this year.

I'm really starting to get a bit ticked by the truncating of long posts... I like formatting, I like writing well thought-out posts, and the lack of notification of whether or not I'm over the limit, whatever it may be, is starting to wear on me.

Anyways, the rest of my post is here:

So, I'm waiting for the second-coming of THE MMORPG, which seems to be under the guise of Mortal Online. I could honestly care less for Aion, Darkfall, Star Wars: The Old Republic, Star Trek Online, Jumpgate Evolution, Champions Online, DC Universe Online, Age of Conan, Warhammer Online, Dungeons & Dragons Online, and what have you.

But you know what, if you really want to try an interesting free-to-play MMO, you should check out Dragonica, which is a fairly cute 3D side-scroller. It kept me playing for about a week, and that's a bit of a record as of late.

Yoshio
Post Time : Jun 25,2009 4:12 pm

Hmm, looking at your list of games, I'd say you're going to all the wrong places to try out all the wrong games. You said you don't have time to grind, right? So stop looking at games that have a huge amount of leveling, which most do; look to games like Mortal Online, which unfortunately isn't out yet, or Ultima Online, which is ten years old now. You also said that you want a high amount of customization... Well, you sure as hell aren't going to find that in any free-to-play title... Not yet, atleast.

Of course, I think you could very likely stand to play any game for a few months at the very least if you settle in with the right people. Make some good friends, join a good clan or guild, and you'll like find it all a lot more fun than it really is.

As for myself, I'm thoroughly pissed at the state of MMO's. Every thing is the same; you always play the epic hero in an epic quest, but so do the other million players who look just like you. You always have to reach the highest level to do some proper PVP and to enjoy the bigger, more intricate quests or instances, of which there are so few that you end up repeating them over and over, but not for fun--for phat lewts! 'Cause throughout the entire course of the game, you'll want and need the best of the best gear with +20 to breathing, eating, sleeping, thinking, and sword-chuck'ing, much of which you won't be able to use simply because you aren't the right class, don't have the right stats, or aren't high enough level. It seems that all of these MMORPGs are extremely intent on imposing ridiculous limitations just so that you spend more time playing and more time paying rather than trying to provide enough freedom and fun to keep players completely hooked. In my opinion, MMORPGs peaked with Ultima Online.

So, I'm waiting for the second-coming of THE MMORPG, which seems to be under the guise of Mortal Online. I could honestl

Seizaku replied at 5:47 pm Jun 25,2009
I don't have the time now, but I have vacations and holidays to play, those are the days I'm using for my games and I don't care about grinding (I started on Ragnarok Online, that game was pure grind), I care about excessive grinding - there's a limit for everything. Have you seen the amount of customization Perfect World allows? And many other games have customization options too, of course, that may involve buying cash shop items for make-up and exclusive haircuts, clothing and etc, but it's there. Also, for me there's not THE MMORPG, there's a game that suits my tastes - even with it's imperfections. Anyway, I'm also downloading Draconica but side-scrollers have to be really good to get me into, I didn't liked Maple Story but I'll give Draconica a chance, the graphics got me interested.

first off fiesta you wont like if you didnt like CABAL its bascialy runescape meets cabal, and Jade Dynasty is like ether saga only not anime-ish, when i logged into jade dynasty i could swore the n00b begginer city was exactly the same as ether sagas were.

but i also that problem played WoW and expect so much from a game now its hard to find a good one, i played rohan for awhile but after a month or so its gona boring and repetive, so now im just playing casual games and FPS' like crossfire, just waiting for the next big thing to come out.

Seizaku replied at 1:59 pm Jun 25,2009
I dunno, my problem with CABAL was more along the lines of the environment than the game itself, the gameplay was good, but the game was looking like it was unfinished (and the sound of swords clashing everywhere was annoying), and most of the people were downright rude to me with no apparent reason except for "looking mean to the 'n00b'". Anyway, I prefer to test something and giving it a chance before discarding it.

Yeah I know this too, some games I leave after 30 minutes (or earlier) of playing and pressing the "deinstall" button.

Not sure what exactly causes that, but I think it's like when you meet someone new in RL, after a few seconds you know if that person is appealing to you or not just by looking at him/her.

It's just all a matter of taste, some people love game X to death others hate it to death.

Well the latest game I played was Atlantica, played it like 3-4 days but dunno, it's kinda boring and reminds me of Sword of the New World due to the mercenaries (played SotNW almost one year). Before Atlantica I tried Aion and liked it very well, I think I'll go for it when it gets released, I just need to "waste" my time somehow until September. XD

I agree that one of the biggest things that the current crop of games are letting people down on are the people who run it themselves. They're not paying attention to the players and giving us slow updates. That's the problem with one of the games I USED to play.

Post Time : Jun 25,2009 7:35 am

Honestly I played jsut about all the games listed here and still I haven't been able to really keep dedicated to a game like I used to back in the days when I played  Ultima Online but I stopped playing that around sometime just after modains lagacy or the end  of summria empire. Reason why I was hooked on UO the most was becasue while there was no level system all there was is stat and skills with caps in place, plus after certain expansions some of the skills also preety much became worthless like arms lore and things like taste id and such wasnt really appereacated anymore. Problems with current and most F2P and even quite a few P2P games is that it's not only that its a grind but the grind itself feels like you have to pain yoruself to do it, if they would every figure out that grinding wouldnt be so bad if they accuyaly made it quite entertaining or at least get you hyped up about killing mobs to level you know something that keeps you from making that constant look at the slowly moving exp bar.

Seizaku replied at 8:53 am Jun 25,2009
I see that, I also experienced that on RO, a short before I finally quit the game they updated so many things that the gameplay changed a lot, I didn't had the time, neither the will to learn alone how to play the game again.
And the grinding is more about a cultural difference than anything, I don't remember where but I've read from asian players that grinding for them it more along the lines of "There's no reward without hard work". Changing it is more on the responsability of the localizators of a game than the developers, because the developers are more likely pleasing the public in their home market (mostly China and South Korea).

I have the same problem, I played FFXI since it's release, but then I lost interest and added that all my friends quit or ,oved to WoW -.-  I tried WoW and just cant stay interested in it.  I also tried pretty much all the games you mentioned, and there are three that have my atention right now.

Perfect World (I like the untaimed race ;p)

Shin Megami Tensei (I like this series as well, but I have onyl played the Persona games)

Luna Online (its cute and interesting)

to be honest though, I am just passing time till FFXIV is released ^.^

Seizaku replied at 8:47 am Jun 25,2009
Persona series is really good, I enjoyed the 3 and 4 and now I'm trying to find the 2nd game (but it's out of print and no one wants to sell a used CD). The only thing that annoys me is that I feel much more attached to personas than I feel to the demons on the main series, I couldn't fuse my Izanagi or Orpheus into something else without feeling that I was missing an important part of my character.

And I know what you're feeling, I can't hope but to feel excited about FFXIV and Blade and Soul, those seem to be games that are worth paying to play =]

been played mmorpg's for like 10 years now, i basicly played 90% of the existing mmorpg's but on 80% of them i wasted more time on dling+install then actual playing the game due to their suckage gameplay or really high or bad grafx, the only game i could stick to for a long time was lineage2, been playin it for about 5 years, been a l2jdev for about 2 years also, but other then that... maybe some mu online global till 65 (after release), atlantica till lvl 40, sword of the new world till lvl 60+ , archlord till 30, talisman till 50, 2moons 70 till i found a major glitch for fast lvling, reported and got ignored so i just quit,  but that's only because i like to play them from the early CBT, to see if they worth playin or not, like for example i've played YSonline from cbt and like made all the classes till lvl 24 and now i'm waiting for OB to see how the game will change, yet again i played Dragon Sky the CBT got like lvl 30 or so and then aeria jumped from CBT to OB with no major bugs fixed at all, they just translated a few items and give it a go! so even tho i lvled till 30+ again and i found a really nice guild and friends, most of us agreed to dump it since the game fixing/support was about 0 and the game was barely playable, but heh it's nothing new when it comes to aeria, they just buy the games to kill them, if you do a small search on google, you prob get more results on how bad aeria it is then its actual games. now moving on i played some jade dinasty (even tho i played the other versions) got like lvl 20 and now im bored, same happen with aion due to the fact that its very similar with l2 i got bored of it before lvl 20, i'll have to wait for YS OB or red war OB to test some more... and heh all these while being a game dev tho

also with no intention to offend the hardcorefans of w0w, thats of the worse mmo game i ever played, i wasted like 3 hours to download the whole shet and then another ones to install the game,

S4league will get u addicted for awhile. Dragonica is like an arcade type of game . I love requiem but once you reach lvl 20 you kinda need a partner to help you.  Luna online is really good for fast exp even solo! I got up to lvl 35 o.o
