An Online RPG That Runs In Your Web Browser

With Free Realms reaching over 4 million registered users, let’s just say this game has made the rounds. I can honestly say, however, that if you have not yet played the game, you are missing out on an experience. While this game may be aimed at a younger audience from the ages of 9 to 14, Free Realms can entertain any adult who wants to feel like a kid again.

On the site alone, it quenches the thirst of a competitive gamer with leader boards on almost every mini game you come across.

One thing is for sure, when you mention Free Realms, you cannot forget about the built in mini games. Some are job oriented. For example, when acting as a Pet Trainer and choosing to teach the pet a trick, a mini game where you have to trace the shape which is shown to you on the screen opens up. Other mini games can be found on the map. For example, a harvesting mini game is located at any farm, symbolized by a watermelon on your map. This mini game is a matching game where you select 3 or more of the same vegetable or fruit by clicking the start of the chain and dragging it to the end of the chain. The objective is to collect the correct amount of bushels of the needed ingredient to complete the primary goal, while having the option of completing the secondary and bonus goals as well.

Another game built into Free Realms is its trading card game, which will spark the interest of players who ever played Magic the Gathering. You get introduced to the TCG once you become a card duelist and obviously, when playing a TCG, you need cards. There is many ways of going about obtaining them; you can choose to purchase cards in the card store or by earning them when beating NPC’s during quests. If you’re a member, you can trade with others, plus you will receive booster packs each month.

In the world itself, you are presented with a colorful vast landscape, which proves to be a haven for the adventurer at heart. Each destination is unique, whether it’s a forest full of spiders or a seaside village with sand castles. The world is also a collector’s paradise, where if you collect enough items, you receive a reward.

While everyone starts as an adventurer there is still many jobs that you can do as a non-member. Your choices are: ninja, chef, kart driver, postman, demolition derby driver, brawler, pet trainer, card duelist and miner. If you’re a member, there are additional choices such as: archer, wizard, medic, blacksmith and warrior. Membership fees are $5 monthly.

When it comes to questing, Free Realms provides the player with loads of help. To give you some examples, active quests NPC’s glow green, that is, a green dotted path will help point you in the right direction during quests.You can also find the location of where you have to go by bringing up the map and spotting the big green dot. Oh yeah, don’t forget fast travel teleporting from city to city by opening the map, right clicking the village and selecting ‘teleport now.’ Free Realms makes questing simple.

Let’s move on to the combat system. It is easy and accessible, with no learning curves and the simplest mechanics of probably any online RPG.You can point and click on your enemy or use the hotkeys that are mapped to your keyboard. There are 5 combat skill hotkeys and 4 supply hotkeys, making it easy to strategize and take on multiple enemies at once.

Unlike most games, combat is voluntary in Free Realms: you have the option to fight whoever you choose and then you will be transported to an instanced zone.

After The Dares E3 Snowhill concert, Free Realms added guilds to the mix, allowing players to create their own guild or join someone else’s. This is just one of the many additions to the game, and it frequently has updates that provide you with the opportunity to acquire exclusive items.

To sum it up, Free Realms gives you a sandbox of goodies to collect, simple and easy game mechanics, a bright and detailed world, a variety of mini games and leader boards and most importantly, delivers what it promises: control over your every decision. It’s your world. 9/10
