Atlantica (Can it be a great free mmorpg?)

Category: Game Reviews Game: Atlantica Online Posted on Aug 05, 2009 1:51 am

Alright so today my review will be on atlantica. So far this is one of the top free mmorpgs out as we speak or is it? I believe the best solution to figuring this out was to play the game. As I began my vast journey into a new game. I decided it was time to check out the story. Heres is the basic run down. Your atlantian people have been a big bunch of crystal hogs and did not want to share their great resources with other countries. They exhausted the crystal powers and ended up destroying themselves sadly. Moving on thats were you come into the picture. Your land has dissappeared in the blink of an eye and now you are sent on this brutal quest to find remnants of your home land. Plus to find out where atlantica is as you and some mercenaries you hired search the deepest and darkest depths of the world. "Hurray!" Fear not, even though the story is rather plain and basic just like most mmorpgs these days. Were they lack in writing they make up for in beautiful graphic designs and gameplay.

Lately graphics are everything in a game next to game play and when I say atlantica fits the bill. They have mastered the art of knowing how to capture their audience. They allow different settings of graphics, which even on the lowest level of setting seems to be quite pleasing but for those with the some what high end pc's. Kick that bad boy up on the highest setting and watch as your drool hits the keyboard! Besides the stunning graphics, what would the game be with out its awesome gameplay! Which most people disliked sadly....(cries) But believe me when I say this is a new break into the mmo world. Strategic battles are the key to success for this company, as they give you a chance to control 9 characters in a turn based game. If you are still wondering how this works, worry not I will be informing you on this. They set a timer of 30 seconds for you to move up to five characters at once but the catch is you may move them to diferent positions of the 9 slots given. At the same time only five characters are allowed to attack between the nine. You have to have 100 action power to attack, these are just some of the basic mechanics that make up their fighting system. It is a beautiful yet unliked at times format. Most mmo players are not used to this and tend to struggle with the strategic part of this game but the game developers have made such a vast and easy tutorial for you to learn. There is no way you can not become a pro at winning your  battles in this game.

One thing you will notice about this game is its vast world. When I mean this world is so big it is the whole eastern continent! Japan to europe to africa. The good part about this vast land is that you have different forms of transportation. Consisting of horses, elephants, tigers and many special mounts. If you can not afford a mount fear not they give you a chance to teleport from town to town. The bad part is that you must visit this town before hand and no one wants to walk around this world from town to town when there is over 30 towns. So pick and choose your towns wisely! Now for the little important things that we usually over look in a game like this because of its graphics and gameplay. The music is beautiful and you can listen to it a lot, mainly the battle music. It flows very well but the town and journey music tend to become quite dramatic over a long period of play. The pvping is quite fun and have a great system for matching you up with your perspective level the only problem is when there are 18 divisions (Division 1 being the highest) and they move you up a divison every two fights you win. You find yourself in division 15 fighting level 40+ people and your only level 20.

Although there is still possibities of winning this just becomes a quick turn off to the game. Besides that their is many things to do in the guild section. Which really brings the guild communities together by creating a nation and owning towns. Partying system is quite fair and fun. Yet it is only limited to three people there is 27 characters being controlled in a fight at once, I personally must say impressive. We can not forget about the market, arena, and crafting these three things are vital to the game. The market holds value of being able to sale your crafted items and found ones. As well as buying items to craft or even for a quest. It is almost impossible to never find what you are looking for in the market or your just blind! Arena is basically a system of automated fights that people bet on. Roll your luck and hope you win big. You can make up to ten bets and believe me when I say gambling is bad! Of course we do not know any better. Yes we can not forget about crafting. The worst part of most mmo's is the crafting. No one likes it because its nearly impossible to find the items to make something and when you do its a piece of garabage! But this game has learned from others mistakes and allows you to buy every item from the market to make these items. They even sell craft books so you do not have to auto craft your way to completetion of the item. Most players will find crafting easy yet fun at times because of the fun success of leveling up your crafting which others can level you up or artisans that walk around.

Enhancing and enchanting, do not get these two things confused as their names are similar and things are done very close. They have different outcomes!. Enchancing well thats self explainatory. You add stuff the weapon or armor of choice and boom strong better more defense or attack. The true fun is in enchanting because your weapon glows and who would not want a kick ass glowing red sword or shield? Sadly only weapons glow and not armor.  Well I have told you most of the key elements to understanding if this game could be great but one thing I left out is that their are special mercenaries you can obtain through long vigarious quests and at the same time quest can become a bit tiresome but rewarding!. Their is Spartans,Elementalist,Lady Knights,Witchs and many more! As you can see this game has great potential in becoming the next generation of mmo's as its style may be seen in many upcoming mmo's. At the same time it lacks a lot of the base things that make the game rather bland and boring but the community and game play picks up for that so this game is definetly a top 5 in the books.  Im sure we will soon be seeing more games like this in the future.

if you want to enjoy the game late in, you MUST have either blessing potion or a blessing license. without either you are domed to fail even against normal enemies of the dungeon and bosses are pretty much impossible unless you overlevel by a lot.

This game is really great compared to the garbage games out there seriously. However this game is HELL EXPENSIVE. Be prepared to spend alot like the many others i know if u want to play this game long term. Not everyone has the time to spend like those high levels who have spent $0 but get massive equips by farming day in day out for ingame gold. TBH i know many who have spent more than a thousand bucks already.

This game is absolutely ANNIHILATED by the lack of any GM presence. It is very obvious that no one cares about this game. Developers, producers, players, and anyone else involved. As long as the mindless sheep keep funneling money into the cash shop, no one seems to care that the game has had no content update in almost 6 months that did not involve adding new items into the cash shop (and little else)

i quit the game because ndoor is trying to hard to force the players to play in a certain way that favours them.

You must be a certain way into the quest in order to loot items or get completely screw over. This leave a nasty after-taste for those of us who do not wish to rush throught the content.

The stamina system, although it promotes partying, it also demotes soloing in the beginning of the game where you want to take your time to get use to the game and making the ideal format for you. Instead of rewarding you for partying, it penalizes you for soloing. Inorder to to regain stamina, you are to spam players and join in the pvp tourney where not everyone is interested in at the low levels.

They want you to commute with other player so much that the game is filled with so many popup of every minor events that we just do not care about. For every random give you are given by high level player to obtain stamina, you must reply to them in order to recieve the item. You will find yourself seeing tons of players just blocking many of the commnity features to keep down the spam.

Normally the stamina and being force to party and pvp didn't bug me as much as when i beta test for the game without the stamina system since I play this game for a change of pace. But once I found out that I am no longer able to play the way i want, which was to slowly and taking my time through the content, was the last straw.

Very true indeed I believe it was on the border line of dying. I just actually quit the game kind of today because when the community dies the game is left with the strategic part and boring ass grinding which later on dies out. So I believe yia is right it will die within a couple of months. As well as frogman302 this game does lose the face of role playing which is very sad including the story but it just brings something new. So maybe a new genre of mmo's? would you believe that to be true?

To me, controlling a bunch of characters lessens the role-play part of the deal, and then it's more like a strategic war game.  And the real time turn based gamplay was nice for say the old final fantasys because you had an awesome story to go along with it.  But with just the turn based battles alone with no good story, it's just another grind, and imo, an even more boring grind than the usual mmo.

i though it was a free mmo to begin with, since the sign up didn't ask for my credit card.
