They need to be renamed because they are full of crap. All they're doing is trying to blame problems on things they don't agree with. They can scream all they want, but in the end, all they have is lack of evidence and a biased argument. Sex and video games are NORMAL. Trying to prevent them is NOT normal. It also doesn't help that the Christian religion helped to propogate many of the problems we have today. Trying to condemn other people for your own actions is just hypocrisy at its best. The following is my counter argument to why their arguments fail and like them, I won't bother to provide evidence from a credible source.
The Education:
One of the problems we have today is the education system. The budget is constantly being cut. Everywhere you go, the focus is on science and math. That is all. You are expected to know at least Trigonometry, Biology, Chemistry, and maybe a bit of Physics. The problem is that once you are out of school, this crap is useless. If I'm going to be a reporter, I won't need to know Trigonometry. I'm going to need a English degree and classes in Journalism. If I'm going to be a teacher, perhaps I should take a bit of Children Psychology and get my teaching credentials along with an education in what I want to teach. If you want people to pay more attention in school, build classes around their major rather than a general education. The way I see it, College Algebra is enough for most people to get by in life. Very few professions actually require the use of a high level math degree. Some jobs that require it to graduate with heavy math never even use it in their job. If you want people to focus in school, it has to be what THEY want to do. Not what YOU want them to do. Do not make them take 20 useless classes that they will never use in the future. Do not force someone who cannot stand the sight of blood and hates dealing with sick people into a doctor. How would you like it if I forced you to spend the rest of your life doing something you absolutely despised?
Here is a fun fact. The Body Mass Index was created by a math (not health) expert in the 19th (not 20th) century. So not only is it outdated, but it's not even created by an expert in the subject. People are are just a bit overweight tend to be healthier than those who are in the "normal" range. It also does not take into account muscle mass which basically invalidates the whole thing. Now how many of you actually learned this in school?
The Role of Parents:
It is the duty of parents to teach the new generation proper and improper. Instead of reading from the bible every Sunday, perhaps its time they started teaching proper life lessons and skills not reading 5000 year old teachings that you probably do not even follow any more. Helicopter parenting is one of the worst ideas. Parents should never attempt to exert control over children for so long. Such a long time can create dependency issues. Random drug tests IS a violation of their privacy. How about I start following you around and keeping track of everything you do every day for the about 20 years and see how you respond? Or maybe I'll give you random quizzes to see how well you know the bible by heart? It implies that you EXPECT them to be doing drugs and have NO TRUST in them at all. Its the same as playing off stereotypes. If you want them to act as a good person, you have to raise them to be one. Overly controlling parents might be even worse than careless parents because you are knowingly and forcibly hindering their growth. Quit blaming your problems on society and try fixing it yourself for once.
Sex:
Sex is part of human nature. You can't stop it. After puberty, people will have sexual desires. The longer you force them to hold it off, the greater it will be. College is the first real chance that many people get away from their parents and thus provides themselves with the opportunity to spend more time with friends and develop relationships. Because they have been holding it in so long, they will have a greater desire to do it. With alcohol lowering inhibitions, they are easily overwhelmed by their desire because they have been holding it in for so long. The solution would be to lower the legal age. Heck, 16 is old enough in my opinion. People who have already had sex have NO right to tell others to practice abstinence. Especially for a bunch of people that was having kids work at the age of 10 and marrying them off at the age of 15 just 2 or 3 generations ago. Drug addicts should not be telling other people to stop using drugs. You know who you are. White collar criminals should not be telling people to donate to charity. Legal age of consent in Japan is 13 (with provincial exceptions) yet they have lower rates of sexual assaults than most places in the world with higher ages. In Japan, sex is not taboo and pornography is not shameful. Perhaps they need to take a lesson from them and understand whats going on. The more forbidden you make something, the more they will want it. However, if you can make it undesireable, that's something different.
Drugs:
Drugs is always a problem but it doesn't help that you introduce them all at around the same age. Alcohol is 21 in most places, but in college people can often buy it easy and give it to someone else. This would bypass the age limit and make it pointless. Smoking is also legal at 18 so that does not help either. If you have a problem with it, ban it or regulate it. Not just screw around with it. Forcing regulations is much easier than just outlawing it. People will always try something once. The best way to avoid this is to make regulations that force drugs to taste like crap. This would discourage people from using it and be more effective than any type of ban out there. You make it bad enough and they will not pick it up again.
Video Games and Sports:
Video games is something that people spend a lot of time on for the purpose of entertainment. Gaming only lowers GPA if you choose not to study yourself. Video games do not stop people from studying. People need time to themselves. If they choose video games, then that is their choice and others have no right to say otherwise. Some people might prefer a sport, but these people choose video games. Either way you are still wasting your time. If you are in college, odds are if you have not been scouted by a major sports team you will not be a professional player so why keep spending time on it? Hit the books instead. The problem is that schools do not prepare people for college anymore. High school gives you a poor example of college life where you spend 4 years doing almost nothing new and each class is like 20 weeks long mainly relearning things you just learned last year. A typical college class? 10 weeks. As a result, people expect the same from colleges. This accounts for more of the GPA drop than video games ever will. If you want people to actually focus more on schools, eliminate 3 years from high school so that you go from freshman to college. Get your lazy ass off your administration chair and reform the schools already.
School athletic culture was never at a threat to video games. It will always exist. However, school athletic culture is by far one of the worst in my opinion. Nothing promotes homosexuality like football and wrestling. Two guys hugging or whipping each other with towels naked in the bathroom sounsd more gay than most innuendos I can find in video games. Also, keep in mind that this is school athletic culture. Keep in mind that you are condoning the intentional act of inflicting harm on other people for the sole purpose of someone else's entertainment. People DIE every year in football from hitting each other or did you forget the fact that an impact on someone's head can give them brain damage? Also, you cannot accept one and reject the other. If you accept football, you must accept Ultimate Fighting Championship because that too is a recognized sport. Video games is by far safer. Imagine if video games was invented first and schools played them as a sport. Complete with teams, uniforms, scholarships, and competitons between schools. Its all good and fun. Now imagine football has just been invented and people start getting serious hurt. They hit each other and start bleeding. Would you accept football the same way you do now or would you go for the safer option?
Hypocrisy:
If you wanted to be taken seriously, you must first stop being hypocrits. People who once glorified the killing of Muslims in violation of their own teachings have no right to say that violence as bad. Those of you that have had sex already should not be telling others not to. If you say you want the government to "stay out of your body" with its public option you have no right to condemn abortions. If everything is an act of god, you should stop blaming others for problems because god intended for it to happen for a reason and you should not be questioning His acts. Think of it this way, if you want people to eat organic food and not "corrupt modified" food, find a way to feed the 3 billion people that are in poverty and dying of hunger instead of just complaining about it.
