I don't like sports, sports games, hell, even sports drinks. I don't get high one red bull, monster, and only when I'm about to pass the fuck out at work, do I sneak a Vault in my system. If I had to put up a reason for girls to not play games I'd say it's because they feel like there's something better to do or that it's for boys. Talk to people online? I'm calling my girlfriends and we'll go out. Maybe we can play Mario Party once a few years or have wii fit to tell me I'm fat. Get married online? Get married in real life. Tons of girls play games. I mean, I hear a large amount of girls played Far Cry 2 when it came out. I even played the Resident Evil series and the COD series....and a ton more fps. I even played Fallout 3, even with the bloody goryness. And GTA IV. It's just a myth saying girls don't play games.

Well honestly TigerRose its very nice to see girls in gaming. And to answer ur worry about sexist morons around its like just one century since woman have any right to speak at same rank as MAN u know and its only in white continents, while many over races still keep womans on thier old place u know ( with no rights at all).

Hahah, quite alot of different comments and stuffs. Yeah, I am a female gamer too. I played quite a range of games excluding of console games. About labeled as Tomboy part, I am too, but it doesn't really matters. Heading to LAN shops surely made some guys turned their heads. But after winning some stages I have the last laugh. The best part is to have a group of guy friends playing with you. They do not mind whether are you weak or not. They will even train you!

I can only speak for myself: I hate seeing the almost constant sexist comments in regards to girls gaming. I hate cutesy games. MMOsite had a news article a few days ago that featured a teengirl from Copenhagen deciding to drop out of school to go pro playing CoD. You wouldnt believe the comments being made about this girl by some truly ignorant morons. Reading posts like that on a blog that was promoted heavilty by MMOsite  and its Writer's Club makes me feel even less welcome to be around large gaming sites like this place.  Its the 21rst century WHY are these comments even being written?! Why is is still ok to allow an undercurrent of sexism in this modern age?

Theres no reason to keep girl gamers seperate. We're gamers. Why do we need to be treated differently or held to a different standard?  Only guys, who's egos cant handle having their ass handed to them by a Michelle Tina or Sandra, seem to feel the need to put us down.

I don't know really, I've been a gamer (and I'm a female) ever since I was like... 5 years old? Back then, it was very rare to see girl in an online game, but like, these days, that's completely normal... so I don't see where you're coming from. All of my friends know that I'm a hardcore gamer, and I don't find it embarassing at all. That's just how I like to spend most of my freetime.

I agree with Invasion's statement. Society does push girls to be more interested in fashion, make up etc... When your a kid your handed a barbie doll, not a console. Even commercials for games will show action & violence and guys dodging missles (which personally I've always been attracted to action) but im sure most girls wouldnt see eye to eye with me on that.

Kikku also brought up a good point as well about popularity. Since girls aren't suppose to be into shooting games or maybe even mmorpg's, you get labeled a tomboy or something. In Highschool it would be difficult to explain to my friends why I can't meet them at the mall saturday because I had a clan battle to attend in some FPS or MMO, cause they would think games are a waste of time.

So it gets really discouraging to have guys in game insult you for whatever reason and even have your fellow women outcasting you for not doing "girly" things. So i guess most of us will continue to "hide" ourselves for whatever reason. Hopefully over time things will get better for us gamer girls. Man invented a lot of stuff, probably also the stove, the iron and the washmashine (but I'm too lazy to google for evidence, sue me).

Yet some man fail to use them correctly (or at all) and usually go ask a woman (mostly their mom or gf) how to use their invention (worst case: They ask the woman to do it for them). I think it doesn't matter much which gender invents stuff.

I guess most women are just not enough interested in games or they have bad impressions about games and/or gamers in general.

When I go into a gamestore, I'm mostly the only female customer there (unless a mother with her kid).

I'm a girl and I've been playing mmos and console games since I was 10.. ever since everquest was the big thing.

 I must say there are a lot of girl gamers out there so I dont see any fault at them choosing not to play games. Yes I agree that almost all games are made by men and thus they cater mainly to men but there has been some attempts at making games that target females. It is a fact that men and women generally have different interests. Take for example more males like to take part in sports and competitive activities while more women like to go shopping. More casual forms of video games like consoles tend to better cater to females and socially active/busy people because they do not require the kind of dedication and effort that rpg's and fps's demand.

It is rather interesting to see how gaming has managed to rival sex & money.

I dont see many girls playing many games, especially not FPS like Call of Duty 4, or Zomby Panic Source. My girlfriend and I play every game together and when ever she tries to say shes a girl no one 99% of the time no one believes, instead they insult her and call her transvestite or some dumb stuff like that.

I can kind of relate to this article. I can honestly say that I have not had a shortage of dating material, but so far 99% of them have looked down on me for even MENTIONING my personal gaming outside of seeing them (as-in it never conflicted between our interaction)... and the one girl that seemed to like gaming kind of just changed, disappeared, and I never even heard from her again . As to what Windi3 said, yes, I find female gamers really attractive. I think as long as they can hold down a job at least as much as I can (I'm currently job-seeking) and don't choose gaming over me (as I would never choose a game over a girl I'm dating), I think it would be cool to potentially share the same basic interest in playing games... maybe even go so far as to play the same game and interact in-game when we are not going out or around each other.

 As to the actual topic of your article. I have never had any trouble getting women into video games. Hell my ex was a dominatrix and i even got her into mmo's. My current GF is more hard core about mmo's than i am. Played the Aion beta over last weekend and not only did we both hit lvl 20 by the end, we also were both wearing awesome gear that she had crafted for us. Almost every girl i know plays some video games. I have a Goth fashion model friend who likes racing and shooter games. I have another female friend who is a club dj who loves fable 2. I think most girls just tend to be a bit more moderate about there gaming.

Plenty of girls play games, me included. I've even played Tomb Raider, Bloodrayne, and DoA and DoAXBV. And I've played CoD4. It's just a myth that girls don't play games. Plenty do. Plenty play shooters. Plenty play Nintendogs. Just depends.

I meet my gf was rly cool, but after some time my girl start to play more and more and more, and me couse of work started to think about future, and went less and less time for playing. After 1,5 year we broke couse i was sick of her playing 14h a day. Now i realised its much better to have GF that isnt playing. And play for pleasure if i have time. Its nice to have girls in games not funny to be with them :P

Really...I only think #2 really applies.  If their boobs weren't hanging out in nearly every game, we'd probably play more.  There's really no excuse for #1 anymore.  There are plenty of opportunites for women to play now that making a home is not the most important thing; the 1960s have long sinced passed.  Also, its not really socially awkward, at least not for me.  At lunch we talk about games, books, etc.  And they're girls.  But the thing is, we don't talk about it til it's overkill; that's another thing.  But Sims is an awesome game.  Those dog games...are just boring.

Well I believe girls are not that interested to play games because they found that games are not that attractive to them. Dont forget that girls are more emotional side than guys as their brain made them to be, and playing games are not emotional for them as they are not like us who will easy get drowned into the game world, as they are more 'concious' than us that playing games are just playing a box with a joystick and its a waste of time. They more favourite in dressing and shopping which is more 'real' for them beside playing games which is more 'fake' to them, and vise versa, we guys are more favourite in 'techies' like games, cars, mechas, etc than clothing. So the conclusion is the brain between man and women makes the difference.

Well girls and games depends on influence. Many girl gamers, most of them must have been influenced by older brothers or cousins when they were young. Like me, i have an older brother and he was so into games, and he needed some opponents. And now it resulted into his 2 younger sisters beating  him up in games like Tekken, Soul Calibur and Counter Strike. But then once u start going to LANs, the guys kind of look at you weirdly with pervy eyes, (well that was during high school period).

In college it was much better, i could talk DoTA language without problem :P
