The Generations of the MMORPG

Category: Default Game: Default Posted on May 31, 2009 11:05 pm

K Listen team this blog wil be serious, it discusses a serious topic and pikachu got a fucking critical hit.

Yeah no this blog will of course be lighthearted as always but since this topic doesn't really have much to make fun of expect a 5% decrease in humor.

Righty today I would like to dicuss something that has been debated upon for a while now, the Generation of MMO's.  Much like the unreal engine *props Aryoch for getting that shit done* has generation so has the mmorpg genre.  Much has been speculated upon what defines one generation from the next but this is basically my take upon the divisions.  *note MY TAKE freakin trolls better inject that in ur skulls cus I hate flame!

The First Generation - aka Ultima Online

Basically our version of WoW back in '97.  This game was one of the first to feature a massive multiplayer online experience and the personal touch of the roleplaying genre at once.  It had tons of people, trolls, douchebags, hackers, and the lot, but still remained to be quite popular.  Think of it as runescape only with less bullshit and more testoseterone (yes i probably spelled that wrong flame away you grammar nazi's)

Customizable characters, quests, the whole lot, basically your standard run of the mill mmo that was considered to be fucking Jesus' dick back then cus it was just so fucking awesome.

2. The 2nd Generation - World of Mother Freakin Warcraft

What? another generic MMO?

Lemme set this straight child iz kay.  (its okay for those of you who do not haz a cheezburger)

WoW released back in *insert date that an over excited fanboy would know here* and of course fans of Warcraft 3 flocked to this game.  It was the first of its kind to feature immersive gameplay that had an underlying story to it all.  Different races with differently roles in the game, made this a truely unique experiences.  Tie that with a mindblowing amount of dungeons (instances/ dungeons their the same freakin thing), pvp arena battles, full on guild battles, and the first to pull off a successful raid? you have yourself the first second generation MMOrpg.

Now the 2nd generation had everything that the first generation had, but a whole lot more.....well then again if it didn't it wouldn't be in a whole generation out by itself.  Otherwise how else would they have had Leeroy Jenkins?

Anyhow, 2nd generation mmo's included features such as immersive lore (such as batteling the Lich King who is a part of the WoW storyline), group pvp, basically everything you see in WoW.  Maplestory, flyff, silkroad, all of these F2p's who all come to know and hate are considered 2nd generation mmo's.

3.  The Third generation  - sounds fucking amazing already doesn't it? , if you said yes ur a lying shitbag

what? wait....yeah team, it lucasarts in an MMO section, so sue me.

Now here is the debated part, some say Warhammer is 3rd gen, others say Conan, but I say KOTOR Online.

Why?

Cus you have a fucking lightsaber bitchez!

Welll least that's one of the reasons.

Anyhow Kotor imo will be the first of the 3rd gen because of a few special features.

A) Story driven gameplay.

Yes rather than going around and killing 20 pigs and 60 wolves for monies, ur actual going to do something that potentially important.  In short, your actions actually matter in a game, (took em long enough to figure out how to add that feature) The developers promised that quests done for people advances a plotline of your destiny, and similar to the KOTOR games (which i freaking love to death) your actions will lead you down 3 paths, , light, dark, or neutral (which only douches go so pick a side bud).  Oh yeah did I care to mention that you actions affect how the galaxy is arranged? cool beans eh?

B) A more detailed character devlopment

Like I said last time you decisions actually matter.  Also your decisions also make up whether or not your character is either good or bad.  Not of course this is not new in many games you can join factions , but KOTOR will be the first (correct me via comments if i'm wrong) to actually have ur decision matter and affect ur charcter.  From the way people act to you and the danger you will get it, the universe is not limited to your level nor your character creation screen to how you fully immerse your character in the world.

C) Constantly Updated World

Get it? .Hack// and "the world?" ahahahahaha.....

Anyhow all the player's collective actions will affect how the world is devloped.  A planet might be dominated by the Sith, or a saved by the Jedi, or controlled throughthe iron grip of smugglers.  Governments militias, these are things that are not exactly player created, but rather (possibly ) player controlled.

and that's it I'm going to end it short

just an ending note these are my opinion and my facts upon KOTOR and all the other games are just through what I have read and seen, feel free to correct me you little schiests

Grinding? Psh! I don't despise that, in real life... we all grind to be on top, while crafting our own stories. BTW, nice analogy of character development, you used the iconing video game characters!

Great Article Cereldi. Story driven gameplay will hopefully make a better generation.

Most mmos i see revolve around "gathering" and "job-advancement"  which doesn't really count as a story at all. It is almost the norm for mmos now D= (*COUGH* age of armor, flyff, WOW ..etc). Makes me want to light my pants on fire and fling it at the devs

i don´t think kotor online will be a mmo of the third geneartion.

It will have a few changes but still will be the "wow-type"-game.

U click a mob, spam skills and hope the mob dies before u do so.  And lightsabers don´t make a new generaton of MMOs . lol

IMO games like "blade and soul" , "continent of the ninth" & "mabinogi heroes" will be the third generation.

The gameplay will be different. There will be realtime combat and u actually need skill to play the game.

Cereldi replied at 6:15 pm Jun 03,2009
i think the fact that you'll be able to manipulate the surroundings around you through your decisions will be pretty epic, then again KOTOR is a bit open ended so a lot of questions about gameplay are yet to be answered

Nice read there. Story driven gameplay isn't commonly found in quality nowadays, though i felt like SMT Imagine Online was definitely story-driven (there were plenty times where u were given decisions and questions on ur philosophies- affecting your future abilities and such later in the game), though it wasn't TOO great (no pvp)

now, let's use our overly imaginative monkey brains and imagine the 4th generation.

3 possibilities

a) what LeonHart said

b) something like .HACK//GU

c) there won't be a 4th generation. Mutant bunnies would've taken over the world by then.

I'm looking forward to the game too ! Don't see why sony won't take Galaxies to F2p sence it's Fail ! Lawl at Raptor Jesus . 'N I thought we're starting to reaching the end of 3rd MMO gen now ,  the " free mmo clone phase . " Insert good P2P game + Make Clone with cash shop + ???? = PROFIT . " I think gen4 starts when orig . F2P games come more often . Great article : D

Aww Ultima Online... my first MMO, and sometimes I think it's the best one I played so far, though I just played for one month. xD

KOTOR sounds nice so far, just bad I don't like Star Wars. If it kills WoW, then sure alot of developers will try to adapt, otherwise I don't see much changes anytime soon (only in small steps).

Cereldi replied at 3:33 pm Jun 02,2009
eh if u don't like KOTOR there's always Guild wars 2 and blizzard's upcoming mmo

aryoch comment is intersting too, i wonder how the leveling system will be replaced maybe i should write an article about  but too lazy... Dx and i have to do other things too ^^"

Cereldi replied at 3:33 pm Jun 02,2009
haha touche, the lvling system could probably be demolished by making the game not completely combat based....but then again that'll be kinda boring imo

I don't think it would be right to classify a game like World of Warcraft together with all the grindfests. In terms of quality, customer support and numerous other critical areas, they are probably worlds apart. Also be mindful it would not be right to classify mmos just based on the graphics or theme.

Cereldi replied at 3:31 pm Jun 02,2009
haha i understand I just used WoW as the reigning king of 2nd generations MMO's
and no I did not intend for this article to classify generations by graphics, but rather by the style of gameplay

LOL, i dont intend to flame, but guild wars has a story driven gameplay, and Constantly Updated World.

And few facts, guild wars was released 5 months after wow, and is not a wow clone. If you think it is a wow clone, try it out and you will see that it is not.

Cheers :)

Cereldi replied at 3:30 pm Jun 02,2009
lol i know but Guild Wars isn't technically considered an MMOrpg its donned something else

-lvl 20 mage/monk on factions with 15k armor, Guild wars is awesome I'd know Luxons ftw

I hope that someday the MMORPGs will take us to a virtual world just like .hack//
Maybe the next gen MMOs will use touchscreen as Leonhart said, but  I still think that we'll play thru a character for a looonge time =/
But I agree when you said that the "level system" will be extinguished such as the target system has disappeared in T.E.R.A. Online x)

And keep up with the good work with your articles. See ya! =)

XD well I think before the virtual helmet stuff maybe 4th generation would have a touch screen mmorpg..and other stuff like voice command maybe? or like the wii style.. o_o I don't know XD I'm just guessing. Cause virtual helmets won't be around for awhile.

Cereldi replied at 3:49 pm Jun 01,2009
yeah i think the 4th gen probably have full and immsersive interactive gameplay which you do not play through a character, but rather you are the character
and I think that 4th gen would not have levels and such, it would literally be a world where your success and experience account to the amount of skills you have in anything rather than strictly combat

Basically everything you said here is a total truth. For 10 years we are still rottening in 2nd gen of mmos that is no story driven and no frequent world update cause by subsequences made by the players. May be you forget to add up the 4th generation mmo, that is the MATRIX lol we use cable inject into our brain or use cirtual helmet to go into a virtual world for adventure.

But I might say that if to make a mmo with the idea of Fallout 3 will be better, together with your idea of Kotor 3 in developing the 3rd gen mmo. Your article is not much different than what others keep saying: Its time to go for next generation mmo. Nice one buddy! Your article deserves Orcar, if without those 'funny' words lol

Cereldi replied at 3:47 pm Jun 01,2009
