Patches, ohhhh those bastards have been keeping us desperate since Command and Conquer, while it keeps being an essential task for evrey piece of software, well it's still a pain in the ass and you know it.
But what's with the big updates and patches that developers makes us download all at once and what were the greatest solutions that some developers have implemented throughout these 10 years of complex patches, and we recall all that way from EQ,diablo and the great Ultima Online.
Remember those days when we stumbled upon "The ruins of Kunark"? or,buying houses at the auction house in Ultima Online? well mostly of those games required extra content, from what it seemed to be an real big extension, in Everquest it ment another expansion pack, just as what WoW has been doing but, in a digital more affordable way, remember those big patches like, the ruins of ark'urgan or the dark temple, well what blizzard's been doing it's full contemporary adaptation trough the capabilites of a bigger Bandwidth wich we all own right now.
But if we go back to EQ, that could've been a real pain in the ass, so EQ came up with the discs expansions, and MAN! there were many expansions after the first release of EQ, then more games came to rise, and im talking....a lot.The online gaming became popular after those classic rpg, from the very basics of Dungeons and Dragons wich still keeps being popular, these days it has changed, way too much, and from my experience I could tell you that I've never had many problems from all these F2P method that we all cherish(or supose to cherish), if one bug goes off, another one pops out of nowhere, and that's what keeps me jumping out of my chair(OF ANGER).
And it happens when no one tells you what's gonna happen if you don't meet the actuall minimum system requirements, you download the game, download the patches and it took almost all day, and when you're ready to play..."system exception:14" and the game never starts, so you waste your time, your bandwidth and man, you never got to play the game, and you don't even bother going to the forums for an explanation.
in short and conclusive terms, patches are a pain, yeah they can bring more bugs than a ranch full of dead cows, but in the end it's the only affordbale way of getting more content and bugshooting, and the f2p type makes it more riskfull since, there isn't a standard in computing, It's hard to guess all the diffrent type of video cards, exceptions or even OS's, in any way there have been solutions for this, for example the guild wars content on demand ,where you download the content that you need, so if you didn't like the game you just try an especific part of it, and hey! you didn't had to download all the content.
Anyway belive it or not, these upgrades and patches are already being worked around, and evreyday we can see diffrent solutions, but when there's more content there has to patches for it, and right now, we have to live with it,otherwise choose a diffrent game, or rant into the game's forum.
