I've been an average blogger my short time here on mmosite. I've had a couple of recommended articles, some diggs, a few comments and a lot of people telling me I'm an idiot. That's cool. I'm only 18. I have a few more years to be an idiot. Some of the flaws that people have pointed out in my arguments have been good, some, not quite there.
But recently I wrote an article about racism or racist stereotypes and all that. I don't even know what the article is about anymore. I definitely didn't expect it to get recommended. It was just supposed to be an outlet. But still. I got 600 views in 2 days. My other blog posts took about a week. All because I attacked the egos of people.
That's the key. People hate being told that they are stupid or ignorant or ugly or anything negative. They will fight back and claw any inch of ground they can get back after being verbally assaulted in that manner. It doesn't even need to be a true statement. If it was false or a half-truth they would get indignant and go on a rampage trying to prove the person who said that wrong. The opposite is true, however. Tell a person a good thing and they will like you for it. Want proof? Tell a girl that she is beautiful and you will score some points. The number of points scored depends on how vain the girl is, but you will probably score some. Just don't be too obvious about it. Please don't comment on this, ladies. We aren't going to see eye to eye on this issue. We just aren't.
But what I want to say is that we aren't perfect. I am not the smartest guy or the most athletic or the best looking or the hardest worker or the most charming and all that. I got over it a long time ago. Most people not called Lebron James or Orlando Bloom have as well. But here's the problem. We THINK that we are smarter or more athletic or better looking or work harder or are more charming than we really are. It's like, in WOW terms, you think you're level 60, but you're really more on the level 20 side. This overestimation can be seen from the fairly well known 20/80 rule. The 20/80 rule states that people who have done only 20% of the work want 80% of the credit. If you're a sports fan you know that this is probably true. Ray Lewis and Ed Reed are really good players, but they aren't the Ravens defense. However good both of them are, without Haloti Ngata and Terell Suggs and Trevor Pryce and all the other guys on that squad, a bunch of grandmothers could still score on the Ravens. Same thing with the Lakers. Contrary to what Kobe thinks, Pau and Odom and Fisher and Farmar and all the other guys had a bigger impact on the team's success than him alone. Did he play a big part? Yes. But it can be argued that he did not even play the biggest individual role. Phil Jackson should get that honor.
