There aren't any stupid comments in the world. Just stupid people
I'm kinda having a bad day, so forgive me if I sound like I want to rip off the head of my Darth Vader figurine. Well guys, I just want to talk about racism today. Well, maybe not quite racism. But more about racial stereotypes.
As an Asian, when I was in the US, people expected me to be nasty in Science and Math. Most asians were, and so why should I be the exception. To the average American high school kid, an Asian was generally unathletic, wore glasses, always carried a heavy book in his or her hands, loved to study, and would usually tutor you if you asked nicely enough. Well, there are always some truth in stereotypes, but people don't really us, and just make these assumptions
Rudyard Kipling once said "What does he know about England who only England knows?" That, my friends, sums up the argument I want to put forward in a nutshell. Americans don't know jack about anything outside their country. I hail from Singapore, and just because it sounds Asian and my ancestors were Chinese people think it's in China. To prove my point even further, please watch that video. And no, those people are not paid actors. If they are, they ought to be in Hollywood. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k0RH0cYs4lw
Its the same reason why I don't get all that patriotism that Americans have. Do you guys even realize that most of your country isn't even owned by your countrymen anymore? China alone has several trillion dollars worth. Basically, China is keeping you afloat. All it has to do is just release a statement saying "We lose all faith in the US dollar". You think the economy is bad now. Ha! Wait till after that. I would just pick a random company and short their stock, and I would probably earn. Wait a minute, I'm already doing that right now. I mean, I would earn MOAR!
On the flip side, while we in Asia all know about you guys, you guys know nothing about us. I have studied in America, and lived there for 2 to 3 years. How many Americans can say that about any Asian country. If I pick out a random American and ask him or her, have you been to Thailand, or China, or India? They would probably say no. If they said yes, I would then follow up with a question of what they learned about the culture. They would either tell me information that was next to worthless or say they didn't learn jack.
Which brings me to why I really wanted to blog about this. The other day, I was playing an online game with some friends, and there was a redneck I mean American playing with us. For some reason my friend got into an argument with him, and after some bickering he responded with "You fucking chinks think you're so good just because your country is doing well right now. Let me tell you this - twenty years from now, we'll still be the world's only remaining superpower". I say this guy needs to do some research
Guys, I just noticed that in my zeal, I missed out on the main topic of the blog. My bad. And here I was thinking that no one got it. Guess I'm the idiot this time around. Well, my main problem is that while Americans know next to nothing about other countries, they insist on sticking their noses into other people's business. If you ever went overseas, you would know. A lot of people don't like Americans. I'm not saying this from a bias point of view (well, maybe I am), but ask other people who have been overseas. People really don't like Americans as much as you think they do. You think you were heroes in the Iraq War? We think you were bullies. On a side note, I really like the comments. I try my best to reply as soon as possible. Just one request. Please read the entire article thoroughly before commenting. I had a guy say I'm from China, when I'm really not, as I stated above. In fact, I find it annoying.

thlee, all of Malaysia and Singapore are as much tied to China as Armenia is/was to Russia. Armenia was never a part of Russia, but it was a part of a union along with many other nations. I never said that Singapore was a part of China, but I can see how saying "seperatist" might imply that is what I thought (becuase to seperate you have to be a part of)... that's my mistake. Poor wording on my part I guess.
Quick correction: In my post 2 down from this one, I meant to say that the small countries depend on Russia, NOT that Russia depends on them lol. I read it again, and I guess my mind shifted as I typed. Typing 80-100 wpm does NOTHING for someone if they can't keep their mind straight and say exactly what they want to say lol. <--- talking about me here.
looks like I got cut-off again. Strange.
What I was saying is that I don't think I said anything bad about where you are from, only that your country is to China like Armenia is to Russia. Many Armenians spit on the Russian name, while still depending on their military protection, economic trade routes, financial aid, etc.. Singapore is very similar in that way, although with a vastly different culture. Once again, I did not mean that in a bad way. Just setting some context.
"I've never been aware of any of the middle eastern countries being part of the USSR???? though they did trade weapons, buy tanks, planes etc off most of the major powers of the time."

There is much that we will never know about. What is taught in school and what happens in the real world all boils down to politics and what others THINK we should know. Of course the oil nations did not join the union (why would they want to share the oil or the money?), but many small contries from the region where once one nation. There is much in politics we will never know about. I spoke to an ex-CIA covert agent that was stationed in Afghanistan. He was there calling targets on many "interesting" activities. He claims one of his buddies was personally there when they skinned Osama alive. The U.S. funded him, and when he stepped out of line a little, the U.S. took him out. Now it just seems like the puppet is controlled from beyond the grave. He was a tool. I doubt many of you will believe me, and I hope most of you don't (for my own safety and for this post to stay here).
"To Reaper. You do realize that that rant you just went through has made you as low as me? It is an ironic thing. I ranted and slammed Americans, and you ranted and slammed SEA people. In the end, the king and the pawn go back into the same box don't they? I tire of this. Life is a stage, a comedy. Either learn to play and take it lightly, or bear its troubles patiently."
That clip was about as funny as the Jackass movies. That report was not done to be "funny" on it's own part, but to make fun OF people. Also, I do disagree that a shifting market really "hurts" people in the long-run. That is the way the economy funtions. Once people adapt to it, the tide shifts again, and the process continues. If someone produces a product or service that is irreplaceable, then they are valued more in society. If nobody buys that product or service, then that is simply a sign to move on. This is far different than the many claims made in the below posts stating how the U.S. is filled of dumbasses that are getting crushed by China and are soon going to be enslaved by them (I'm exagerating here, but that is almost the point some were trying to make lol). Also, I don't see how I insulted your area. "Faux-seperatist" means fake-seperatist. It is much like many of the states that completely removed themselves from the old Soviet culture and now spit on the Russian name... such as in Armenia. Russia is much like the U.S. is in many ways in how it is despised by surrounding countries, yet still somehow depend on them for militarty protection, economic trade routes, etc.. Singapore is in much the same way with China. Sure you are a seperate city-state, but such a small one that I simply don't understand why people get SOOO upset over having it get confused with China. I never said the place was BAD or that it does not have a right to exist. It simly seems like a pride thing, and much to do

I have noticed you edited your article to apologize and state your true intentions. Respect.
I believe everyone has something they dislike against every race, based on stereotypes or not. Personally, I get very irritated by young Americans who come to Singapore or Thailand and act like they should be treated like royalty. But I definately do not hate every American below the age of 25, nor the race in general.
Yes, they do stick their noses into other countries matters. This is because most Americans are zealous and try to help out, regardless if they really know what is going on. This is of course, is not necessarily only a bad thing.
To sum it all up, don't generealize, especially when you not saying something nice. If that redneck guy pissed you off and deserves a bashing (And rightfully so, based on what you said), they bash him. Don't bash the whole race just because there are stupid people in it. Because I have sure as hell since my share of stupid Chinese people, and that goes for all the races you can list out.
I guess it wasn't apparent that by having a Thai girlfriend, I spend a lot of time in Thailand. And really, if you think the generalization of Americans being zealous and overly-helpful is bad, wait till you find out the generalization that the Thais got themselves...
Ok ok i REALLY liked the last paragraph because I have the same feelings about the Iraq war and I totally agree with it. Much better blog because of that(:
I have met some 'stupid' Americans over the internet, as well as some smart ones. This once a guy asked me if I was from the UK, and I replied with a, "No, I'm from Finland," and he goes, "Ohh, is that in the UK?"
Wow. Just wow.
But this has not only been Americans. At least three Singaporeans I've met over the internet, after hearing where I'm from, have asked me if we have polar bears roaming around. What the hell? We're not even up that North.
Now a lot of people just tell me that Finland is a small and insignificant country, so I can't expect people to know stuff about it. Sure, we're only the 64th largest country in the world, and sure we might have a really small population, but our language is ranked as one of the three most difficult languages in the world, our waters are ranked amongst the three most cleanest in the world, we're a really significant country when it comes to forestry, Nokia is from Finland...
I think it's very weird though, like, in grade 7, we had to learn how to name each and every European, Asian, African, North, Central and South American country and state on the map. Not only that, but also the largest rivers of Europe and Asia.
Oh well, I think it's just that since the USA is such a big influence to every other country, most Americans don't feel the need to learn anything outside the US. Their loss, I say.
To Reaper. You do realize that that rant you just went through has made you as low as me? It is an ironic thing. I ranted and slammed Americans, and you ranted and slammed SEA people. In the end, the king and the pawn go back into the same box don't they? I tire of this. Life is a stage, a comedy. Either learn to play and take it lightly, or bear its troubles patiently.
I also got cut-off. It was supposed to say "is that just us from the U.S.A. or all of North, Central, and South America?"
P.S. It is 3a.m. here and I'm tired. Pardon my poor grammatical and spelling errors.
The prosperity of a country does not hurt the prosperity of another. A currency does not negatively impact another currency, instead it is only a tangible comparison (a.k.a. measurement). This is economics 101 that I picked-up here in the U.S. and I resent being grouped-in (a.k.a. stereotyped) as a "redneck American." I also sure as hell know where Australlia, the U.K., and Iraq is on the map. That being said I am originally Russian and I know the connections the Middle Eastern countries had when they were part of the U.S.S.R. My mother the Aeronatical Engineer and my father the PhD in Astro Physics (he published much in his field of study) have the social skills of a 12 year-old here. That is what "specialization" and the removal of "unneccessary" social teachings does to a person. This can be said to many "educated" people I know from Russia.
I'm also a staff member of a heavily populated international private MMORPG server, and while I understand and tolerate poor English skills, any time I venture into a game hosted in the SEA region I get greeted by "u no repec noob," constant KSing of mobs I discretely try to hunt, and of course a number of different languages to basically call me a stupid American.
Before I typed this I actually had a post longer than your article, but trying to add a smiley for emphasis I lost it all before I could post it. MY point is that you people discriminate even harder against an EXTREMELY diversified group of people in response to what some under-educated piece of trash said on some propoganda "news" report. Kind of ironic how someone from a faux-seperatist city-state of a country can so quickly cry "stereotype" (even though most of them are actualy POSITIVE ex. being good at math) and them come back with "redneck Americans"... is that just us from the U.S.A or all of No
Yes, I got carried away. But you seemed to have missed the point. My point is not that if you don't know anything about other people you are a dumb guy. It's when you don't know anything about other people and insist on sticking your noses into other people's business. And IMO, not knowing about other countries does not make you stupid. It makes you ignorant. We are "the first global citizens" as John Zogby once said. I agree with him, but sadly I don't see it happening yet. With all the technology at our fingertips, don't you find it sad that many people are not even attempting to learn about other cultures? Here's a rather oxymoronic way of putting it. In the 1960's, GM was the biggest automobile company. They kicked ass. One day, the Japanese started making cars as well. A GM analyst said "The Japanese are coming". He was ignored. We all know what happened. Now, people are screaming "The Chinese are coming". And what do I see America doing? Nothing. Don't let all that news and visits fool you. Nothing has been really done. Ignorance killed the company, and now it shall kill a country.
Nicely put CalebG. And now that I see your main point Thlee I already know people at sea dont like american's I thinks its been that way for awile now..
Mr.thlee, I am Singaporean like you. And it is posts like this that make me rest my forehead on my palm and shake ever so slightly, as I see yet another fellow countryman fall into the category he so hates to begin with.
As so many have already mentioned, your post, which was probably meant to rant about one person, or perhaps, about how close-minded or un-informed some are, became an all out bash against Americans.
Many Singaporeans havn't been to Thailand, Vietnam or India. I personally have never been to Vietnam or India. I have only been to the state of Califonia in America. I havn't been to Australia, Europe and South America. My girlfriend is Thai and I only have basic conversational skills of the language, and only know 2 of the holidays.
Does that make me stupid? Does that make me ignorant? No, I don't believe so.
Let's put this in context. Do most people in Singapore, living at the western end, know what goes on in the eastern end and vice versa? I wouldn't think so. Why? These two areas have their own "micro-communities", for example, Tempines has their own "town", and everything can be done there. Do they need to know what goes on in the west or even central part of Singapore? No, why would they need, or want to?
Likewise in America. As an American, do they need to know every country there is and their various cultures unless they have to out of necessity? Who are we to blame then then, for not knowing what is going on outside their soil, when we, or majority of us do not know what goes on outside our own soil?
You have went to America, stayed there to study. You had the chance to fully immerse yourself in their culture, like it or not. Americans however, don't come to Singapore or go to China to study. Many Singaporeans too, don't get that chance. And yes, I have to point out, you did get an education from them after all, and you hold a piece of a paper to
ok hey actualy IMO you are wrong completely wrong did you learn anything will yo uwere in america anything really about america ? lol and well you say american are ignorent but are people in any other country less ignorent i dont think so and does people from asia even really know anything about american culture i dont think so and its not becasue we are not interested by asia that we are ignorent lol i kind feel sorry for you being ignorent for me people are all the same in every country right now esp when it come to people who use internet or socialise online ....
sorry for my english ......
Guys I've edited the blog by adding one last paragraph trying to state the meat of my argument. I understand why you guys were all getting so riled up. Yes I sounded as if it were a crime not to know about other cultures. But that was not my point.
Ok guys. It appears that most of you missed my point totally in this blog. I know it wasn't written as well as it could have, but I was having a bad day, so give me a break ok? Well, my point is that Americans are ignorant. People say so are 99% of the other countries. But I don't see India or China going off to be heroes and invading other countries and all that. That's my main deal. If you know nothing, stay at home. No one is going to complain.
Wow theres people in other countrys that dont know about others you know? This whole thing is alittle unfair to Americans. :/ maybe you should take out alittle bias in the things you say. Cause every kind of person America has, other countrys do too.
Who said I just ate kimchi, and thought I knew korean culture? Unlike you I don't make baseless claims and assumptions on people of other countries. However, I do make claims about the government of other countries since they are seen by public eyes all the time. +no point in listing 5 holidays since you'll definitely just say I googled them. You claim that americans are ignorant, well by making this blog post, you just became "american". I'm not denying that we are ignorant, but honestly I've seen more Chinese(w/citizenship, but lacking in english) people being ignorant, thinking they are better than me, same with the elderly Russian Women.
If I was moving around like you I would be learning these cultures period, but I'm not, I'm learning cultures at my own leisure while maintaining my own studies as well.
lol Im impressed you know so much about so many different cultures, but you know, (I dont intend to offend k?) I dont think people are forced to know so much....One that is interested in these stuff can travel, study, and really learn stuff, but I think its a little bit too much to expect that the average american, the average european, or whoever to go so far. I cant really say much about the american people , since you lived there you probably have your reasons and a lot more knowledge about them than me lol. But maybe you should give a try not to stereotype all of them, Im pretty sure you will find some Americans that wont stereotype you as well.Because even though there are awfull people everywhere, nice people are also out there, even in the USA you dislike, and Im pretty sure about that. :) (sry for such long and boring comment lol xDD)
Wow, this post and blog entry is just ridiculous. I'm an american and let me tell you, we do have alot of idiots in our country. I also should tell you that every country in this entire world has idiots in theirs as well. It baffles me how you can comment on racism and act like your an innocent martyr in it all when you respond with the same bitterness that you had recieved. I would say I'm not that patriotic, but we celebrate our holiday's that you dont understand. You celebrate your holiday's we dont understand. that doesnt make us any less inferior to the other. Keep in mind as well that the USA buys a LOT of merchandise from your country. China needs us just as bad "we need them?". Let me ask you some questions also since you seem to know SO much about America =). What was the Land Run? What was the Trail of Tears? How was our government formed ( and NO one quick answer wont cut it )? AND the last. . . when third world countries need help with food, shelter, medical treatment, and hope. . . who helps? When wars start that would result in absolute chaos. . . who intervenes to assist? And when Governments all around the world change, shake, crumble, and break, who has had a government that is unshakable and will never change because we are free to do whatever we believe in? Please before you criticize other's believes and their IQ stop and think if you are going to benefit from the topic or only make yourself look foolish. I hope that you can understand where i am coming from and i dont harbor any bad will towards you. good luck!
Well, yes, of course that is a statement that is true. Still I really think that the decent part of american people is more than the idiotic part but they go unnoticed as they do act in a way that gets them noticed.
Im talking this part:
Which brings me to why I really wanted to blog about this. The other day, I was playing an online game with some friends, and there was a redneck I mean American playing with us. For some reason my friend got into an argument with him, and after some bickering he responded with "You fucking ****s think you're so good just because your country is doing well right now. Let me tell you this - twenty years from now, we'll still be the world's only remaining superpower". I say this guy needs to do some research
o.. ahh.. nice blog
Dont feed the troll? Another stupid comment byS1lv3r..Did you Europeans forget that that the USA is made up of different people from all over the World? So really the Red Neck is this stupid blogger..
im not even going to bother commenting on this.
BTW: dont u even kno the 1st rule of the internet. DONT FEED THE TROLL!!!
You got to love Idiots bloggers..Here the news flash for this punk..The Red Necks that you are takilng about came from Europe...Duh....So it is your own kind is putting you idiots in its place..
Good Day!!
I'm american and i'll admit it's full of idiots just like any other country, no countries better than another for knowing a few fun facts that nobody rly care about. How much do you rly know about america? Since your ripping us for not knowing anything.
I'm no kiss ass fan of the US but you post really sounds racist in itself, I know there are quite alot of rednecks in the US but you cant judge a nation for being all bad, they did just elect a non white president afterall
im sorry but this blog is just ridiculous,(in my opinion most of yours are)
there are more stupid people in the world than JUST america
and this blog is about stereotypes but you're slamming america? "i was playing with a redneck, i mean american", you and your friends probably said something to make him mad, which i can totally believe reaading this blog. there are people in america who know about other countries, how much do you wanna bet they came across people like that while making this film and chose to edit it out, just showing the ridiculous ones and not the smart ones to make the people in the country look more stupid. And who CARES if someone who lives in america hasnt been to china or thailand or japan or korea? It doesn't make them a bad person, but you make it sound almost like a CRIME. In fact, i'm very interested in vietnamese, thai, and other asian cultures, but i've never been because i don't have the money. Boohoo lock me up for it. I'm not a hardcore patriotic, but the next time you make a blog about stupid people, please read over the ones you have already written and take in to count that you, are in fact, not perfect and just as well a STUPID PERSON.
That video was great xD the part when asks how many sides a triangle has lol. But anyway I'm an american and I'm definately not racist and I dont ever really stereotype people and maybe this is exactly what your talking about but...I dont really care to know about other countries cultures because there is really no need for me to unless im writing a report about that country or something so really why should we care about another countries culture so they have 7 trillion dollars worth of america that doesnt mean we need to know anything about their culture or history.
Hey, you remembered me :) It was only a couple of days ago when I wrote last in your other blog post, but still I'm surprised. I must have really annoyed you. No bad feelings, I have that kind of effect on most people.
So now, where were we... oh, yeah. The americans! Well, most of the americans are ignorant of other countries and they know that. There are even movies based on that - Eurotrip for example. I can name a few others as well. Still I really don't think that if you are ignorant of what the rest of the world looks like you are actually stupid. I can accept that most people do not know much about my country but still - what do I really know of theirs? Can you say that I'm stupid or racist because I don't know a thing about Singapore. Well, I know some things but surely not about culture or history. At the same time how much can you really say about Bulgaria without looking it up somewhere? I haven't been to neither USA or Singapore but I sure know more about the US than about your country. And I'm sure that most people who go somewhere abroad for something else than sun and sea surely pick up something about the culture. Not particularly much but the more they stay the more they know :)
Hope I didn't annoy you much again as we both seem to hate idiots and I think that is good :)
I find it amusing that a racist is ranting about racism
I also find it "American" (a.k.a. stupid)
You don't get the patriotism Amercans have for their country? What about YOUR patriotism for YOUR country? IMO, patriotism for any country is completely stupid and illogical. I have minimal patriotism for my country so I honestly couldn't care less if China takes over America or whatever. As long as I still have the right and the ability to entertain myself with video games and anime and other options, I'm happy.
IMO you are being racist as well, since many americans are not like you described. I'm not American, and yes there are stupid americans, as there are stupid chinese, as there are stupid brazilians and so on. (Im brazilian btw) Not many people know about other countries btw.... the world is big you know..... you cant know everything about every single country out there. Only a guy who really want to know that will be able to describe a lot of other countries culture. The important thing imo is to respect everyone. You dont need to exactly know everything about their culture, just respect them.
I honestly can't find anything on TV that would offend me, dryo, but your comment does offend me since I'm American, I'm Chinese, I understand my culture, I understand the Japanese culture, I understand moderately Korean culture, I understand some Italian Culture and I never been there. Fact is americans know more about other cultures than they think, since no one location is straight forward American.
@thlee, Of course every other country can learn about America in general...theres only one thing you need to know, America is a Melting Pot. So, do you really know America? If you do, then I suppose you know the Mexican culture, the chinese culture, the italian culture, the german culture, UK english culture, French culture, the native american culture, and buried deep in there are the bland boring american cultures, the boston, the new yorkers, the chicacans, the west coasters, the texans, montana, etc. No one location in US is the same culture, for example san francisco, north beach is Italian Town and Chinatown, polk street is Vietnamese street, Japantown, then Russian Hill, Mission, very mexican there, then hunter's point. So do the chinese know America or do they just know that we are a melting pot. + America only has a 300 yr history...china...2000 yr + history.
I would agree with you that there are "some" americans like that. I also have similar experiences with people like that such as i get phone calls from tele marketers speaking in Mandarin and they can't speak English. NOTE: I live in Australia and am an Australian born Chinese and my Mandarin is bad, however my Cantonese is good. They just piss me off so much because they are calling an Australian phone number and can't even a little bit say some English. Therefore i just hang up or if my parents are around i tell them to get the phone.
I really don't think that there is a country free of idiots so I really don't see the point about ****ing about idiots from one country or another.
Dude when they say that, don't take it personnally, and well, what can you expect about americans being Online, specially someone being as racist(yes he was racist in game, **** it's a racist term coming from rednecks)as the cartoons and shows they air on that contry, and you're right, americans don't know crap about Asia, it's just a diffrent culture that's it, and the fact that americans feel down right now, it's not because of the economical crisis, its because they're afraid of being overwhelmed by china's economy coming from the fact that were an economical power, still if they had that plenty money, why not taking a look to asia, see what you can learn from them instead of flaming, acting racist, and degrading an entire continent.
Leave your words
