Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto IV took home the Game of the Year award at Spike TV’s sixth annual Video Game Awards (VGA). The televised ceremony was held over the weekend, and was hosted by comedian and actor Jack Black.

Other notable winners included two awards for LittleBigPlanet and developer Media Molecule (Best PS3 game and Studio of the Year), as well as titles ranging from World of Goo (Best Independent Game) to Metal Gear Solid 4 (Best Performance by a Human Female, Best Original Score and Best Graphics) and Gears Of War 2 (Best Xbox 360 Game and Best Shooter).

This year’s event was also notable for the large number of new trailers debuting for upcoming games, in some cases giving audiences detail for the first time. Games spotlighted at the awards include Double Fine's Brütal Legend, just revealed to be published by Electronic Arts, Sony’s Uncharted 2: Amongst Thieves and God of War III, EA Sports' Fight Night: Round 4, Take-Two’s Mafia II and Grand Theft Auto IV: The Lost and Damned, Warner Bros.’ Watchmen: The End is Nigh and movie tie-in Terminator Salvation.

Population balance may not seem like a big issue, after all, in other popular MMOs, like World of Warcraft, the balance of a server barely seems to make a difference (trust me I was on a hugely imbalanced server). However, in Warhammer, each zone has a world pvp section that gives specific advantages to whichever side is winning thus making any population imbalances much more serious than in WoW where there is hardly any world PvP.

Now, I don't know about you, everybody has different experiences and everybody plays at different times, but personally, I have no idea what it's like to be in a zone that has the perks for winning in the world PvP. Every single day that I log on, Destruction has the entire territory dominated. It's gotten to the point where I don't even bother checking the status of the zone anymore simply because I already know what's happening; Destruction controls all points, and even if Order did mount an offense against one of them and secured it a "recapture" Destruction team twice there size is probably already on the way to re-secure it.

Whether or not you see many similarities between Blizzard's epically popular title and Mythic's Warhammer Online, the reality is that World of Warcraft players are going to feel very comfortable in the brand-new game. Much of the framework that has made the world of Azeroth so successful over the last four years is in full force within Warhammer. Blizzard CEO Mike Morhaime tells Wired next massively multiplayer project will be so "different" it won't compete with World of Warcraft; VP Rob Pardo says upcoming dungeon-crawler won't hit until after interstellar RTS.

As the dust from last week's BlizzCon 2008 continues to settle, bits of information about Blizzard Entertainment's future plans continue to filter down. In interviews published week, two executives from the massively multiplayer publisher offered tidbits to Wired about what the next few years will hold for the developer-publisher.

First up was Rob Pardo, executive vice president of game design of the Irvine, California-based Blizzard. The executive was asked about when the recently revealed role-playing game Diablo III would appear in stores. At BlizzCon, the game was available in playable form to the public for the first time.

"Even though it looks really complete, a lot of the content is just not there," he said referring to the polished gameplay footage touted at the event.
