Hi there

I'll try to characterize the most common playable classes in MMORPGs. They may vary from one game to another but there are essentially almost one of each type of these characters in any RPG.

So let's start:

1) THE WARRIORS (Fighter, Gladiator, Berserker, etc.):
The classic melee character. He is seen in every RPG, he's the first line of combatents and one of the most popular choices among players. These guys are STRENGHT based characters builded to deal great amount of damage in closed combat. They often fight with big weapons as 2-handed-weapons and heavy armor.

1.1) THE TANKERS (Knight, Paladin, Defender, etc.):
These guys, even as warriors, have a differente role. While warriors are there to inflict damage on foes, the tankers are there to hold the enemy lines, not letting them get close to the ranged or magic oriented characters. Also known as "meat shield" their build is based on HEALTH. They have tons of hit points, although very often, their damage is compromised for the lack os strenght.

They are very required on BOSSES and DUNGEON/INSTANCES because of their endurance. They can hold the big guy while the rest of the party is busy doing all the damage to kill him.

Along with the HEALER, they are essential to keep the rest of the party alive. Known to be hard to level, they are not as popular as the warriors. They often fight with a shield and heavy armor. And they are MY type of character. xD

2) THE DAGGERS (Rogue, Assassin, Thief, etc.):
Also a melee fighter but with a totally differente orientation then warriors. Their main atribute is DEXTERITY (or AGILITY) and they use light armor and two light weapons as daggers or short swords. This way they give up on health and damage, in orde to aquire great dodge and attack speed. They are hard to hit by monsters and other players and their attack speed compensates their low damage. This type of character is easy to solo with and their fighting style makes them a popular choice amongst PVPers.

3) THE ARCHERS (Scout, Ranger, Hunter, etc.):
The good old archer. With a bow and arrows, they devastate their enemys with accurated and powerfull shots. Freezing and paralyzing skills keep the monsters (and players) away, giving the space they need to control de situation. This is a 1-atribute class build, dexterity gives it all: attack speed, damage, dodge rate, accuracy. So they are almost untouchable by any non-magical enemy, be it a monster, be it a player. That makes them kings and queens of pvp in almost every game, wich grants them high popularity among PVPers too.

If an archers knows how to keep his distance, he's almost immortal, and even if some enemy gets near, still will be hard as hell to hit him since the other classes aren't driven by dex.

4) THE MAGICIANS (Mage, Wizard, Sorcerer, etc.):
DAMAGE! If there is one word to describe the magicians, that would be it. They are full of AoEs and they always have the highest damage on the game. A high level magician is like a God. With powerfull and most of the time beautiful skills, they can vanish the life of the world in a blink. But they are not perfect. They are very, very vunerable: they have the lowest hp of all classes and they wear robes for armor. Beeing hit is almost certain death, wich makes this a hard class to level. Not many people have the time, the pacience and the experience to level a mage to his highest levels, where the fun really begins for them. Keep a mage alive is not an easy task, even in high levels, but if one manage to get all the way to the top... well, then its sure worth it.

Mages are the worst nightmares for tankers, since they always "steal" the bosses attention for them because of the extremely high damage, keeping the tanker (and the healer) very busy. I don't think it's a class for beginners to choose, neither a class to solo. Magicians fight with staffs and wands to maxime their magic attacks.

4.1) THE SUMMONERS (Elementalist, Shaman, Druid, etc.):
Like the tanker, this is more of an specialized magician. The difference of this kind of character is that they don't rely only in magic attacks to fight. Their spells are not so strong as mage spells, cause they have other skills to help them, such as summoning skills or transforming skills. This class is almost always related to nature, so they have a beast forms, wich gives them bonuses on atributes like defense, strenght, or more hit points, or they might have the ability to call on familiars to help them in battle. These magical abilitys makes them easier to play with. Tey are a perfect choice for those who like to solo.

5) THE HEALERS (Priest, Cleric, Enchanter, etc.):
Finally, the god all might in every RPG. Without them, there would be no living (well at least not long enough). This is the RAREST class in any RPG and the most needed too. Everybody wants a healer in their party/guild, but almost noone wants to play with them. Beeing a healer is like beeing blessed and cursed at the same time: friends will grow from the ground. Everyone want to be friends with some healer. There will always be someone of your level, or higher that needs you. Dungeons and bosses would be unbeatable without one of these. they can heal and buff their party members, keeping they alive. Now why is so hard to find a healer?

First: its extremely hard to level. since this is a supportive class, they rely on others to help them level because they have almost no attacking skills (and if they do, they become an hibrid, allowing them to level solo, but keeping partys away from them since noone wants a healer that can deliver damage).

Second: At higher levels a healer would preffer not to have a single friend. Why? "Please, can you ress me?!". This sentence is probably all the time appearing at a healers chat, Since the xp loss from "returning to city" is astronomic, and the healer's ressurrection almost always reduces it.

So there is no break time for a healer, no life. The fact that they are so wanted, and so needed, is their blessing but their cursing too.

Well if you like to help others and fighting arent really your styels, then please: PLAY AS A HEALER!! the world thanks.

Thats it guys. Ive tryied to characterize the playable classes so you can tell which one you preffer, or if you were always confused about what type of character to make, then this might help you.

As I said, I'm a tanker, but I do like archers because of their PVP abilitys. What about you? xD

Thanks, have a good day y'all.

I'MA NUUUUKER a.k.a Mage. The damage is awesome and you are right, it is one of the hardest classes to lvl, buuut that why mages should also be in parties. I mean they can solo, but they're also dependant on tanks and warriors as well as healers. Oh and I also love playing healers, but the annoying 'can you ress' me line does get on your nerves. I usually just walk by them. XDD

Uuugh. It changes, like the seasons. But there's one class you'll never catch me playing ever; Rogues. Healers are pretty much the underdogs of any gaming society, and since I'm a kind and loving idiot I play them as much as possible. Most kicks I get outta Engineers (not mentioned in this article which is understandable since they're an uncommon class). I just like the idea, y'know. You build robots and make them do your bidding...

Warriors forever! They pack tons of physical power and most of the time also have almost as much defense as the tankers.

I use Ranged characters like Archers and if available, Musketeer/Gunslinger. But never crossbow since they are usually ugly.

Good article, I think my favorite class is archer too, :P Well it makes me feel better to hit enemies in range, and before they touch me they are already dead, lol
