Whirled: Why I'm Still Here
Category: General MMORPG Discussion Game: Default Posted on Nov 12, 2008 12:28 pm
***Okay, this will be my THIRD attempt at writing this, both times I've gotten halfway through last night, MegaUpload kept, for some reason, hijacking my window and taking me to their front page. Third time's the charm!***
A huge world that is constantly expanding and changing every day. You are who you want to be, no limits. Fighting alongside or against your friends in intense combat. I have been looking for a game like this for a while now, and even today I would say it does not exist. I bash on many newer MMORPGs all the time for not realizing this should be their goal, and most people probably wonder why I'm still here if it seems as though I've given up hope on the MMORPG business. I haven't.
I had stumbled upon an ad on deviantart one day, an ad for a game I had never even heard of (I've noticed F2P MMO ads are EVERYWHERE, and when I see an ad for a game I haven't heard of I get curious), and seeing that the depicted character was anthropomorphic, well... I couldn't resist... It led me to a mini game called Brawler Whirled, a sort of simple side-scrolling fighter game. However, this was only a part of something much bigger. I decided to browse the site, and found myself signing up.
Whirled (Whirled.com) is a new MMOG made by the company that brought you Puzzle Pirates (another whacky game with a very different gameplay equation spin), and had gone in to beta around March 2008. In Whirled, you can make/buy your own avatars, make/buy your own rooms and furniture, and play games with or against your friends. All in-game items such as toys, furniture, and avatars, can be made and animated in flash, as can rooms and whirleds. Players can make rooms/whirleds, and can link them to other rooms/whirleds, thus creating these huge, explorable universes.

"The sniper avatar was made by that very user, and the fox avatar made by me with the teachings of another animator! You can visit my room by clicking this link"
While many people can find entertainment in that, there are some who will be looking for more gameplay than walking around. Well, there is. There are a few games you can actually play in these worlds, one of them being GhostHunters. You could be exploring a completely conspicuous library, but once you activate the GhostHunters game, you can see the ghosts lurking the aisles, and you and everyone else in the room can fight against them, some players taking the roles as fighters, and others healers. Through playing games, you can earn the in-game currency, "achievements", experience for levelling up (Exclusive to GhostHunters), in-game items, and even usable and fully-functionable avatars. What's more is that most games are actually created by the players!

"You can play games by yourself or with a group. In this game, you can unlock the enemies as either pets or avatars, and can unlock a few more goodies.... The company even holds contests with huge real-life monetary prizes for players who make games about every 3 to 4 months!"
Some people may be saying "So what? It's another IMVU or SecondLife," but I would beg to differ. One big difference between Whirled and everything else out there is it's accessibility. Not only is it browser-based and runnable on most computers (Take that, SecondLife!), it's easier to jump in to it, since animating a 3/4 view character in Flash is a lot easier than building a 3D model (And Whirled also supports 3D avatars!). It's also open to a wider audience, since you do not HAVE to purchase the second in-game currency to buy yourself an amazing avatar (The second currency is there, but in most cases completely optional), just work for it by playing games with your friends or rating others' creations. Creating your own items and worlds is free, however getting them noticed takes a lot of hard work! Just like in SecondLife, you can list your creations in the shops for real-life currency, or for the in-game currency, or both.
As I had said before, however, there still is no game out there that can quench my thirst for adventure and unique, thrilling combat. So why did I talk about Whirled? I believe, that out of all the MMOGs out there with a similar goals, this one game has the potential. Where all the other games out there like it such as SecondLife are built to the blue prints that don't allow for any sort of modification such as a battle system, or Gaia where you are limited to what they have and how much gold you earn/money you spend on them, Whirled has the greatest potential to be the online "whirled" I've been looking for!
Any questions? Comment here/message me. And if you decide to join us here at Whirled.com, send me a friend request (Make sure you mention MMOsite, though, I'm notorious for turning down blank friend requests)!
