Sasha Grey, born in 1988, has been making adult films for about two years. Last year she won two AVN awards and was nominated as Best New Starlet. She has been quite vocal in the mainstream media and appeared, amongst other places, on the Tyra Banks Show and The Insider to discuss her career. Both appearances were media ambushes. Sasha maintained her poise and dignity and refused to stoop to their level. Consequently, both segments have earned Sasha a small measure of internet props.
A couple of weeks ago we reported on an interview (link NSFW) with Grey, where she mentioned her recent purchase of a mint, in-box ColecoVision and a copy of Smurf: Rescue in Gargamel's Castle. The opportunity to talk to one of the porn valley's most interesting talents was too great to turn down. We immediately reached out to Grey and begged for the chance to grill her on the subject of gaming. Our interaction with the beautiful, outspoken sex star was edifying.
Here's what Sasha Grey had to say to GiantRealm:
How long have you been playing video games?
As long as I can remember. Whether it was a secondhand NES, or games on a prehistoric Mac for children.
GR: What was the first game you remember playing?
Tetris...perhaps even Oregon Trail.
What was the first game you loved?
Tetris, Mario Brothers, and Zelda.
How often do you play?
I don't play video games as much as I'd like to, I'd say I get an hour in once a week or so. Hopefully that will change...
You're on the road a lot - do you take a DS or PSP with you? If not, is that something you're thinking about?
I usually play games on my iPhone - if I'm on the road I do a lot of sleeping and writing! But the idea of getting into Brain Age does excite me.
What are your favorite games and game characters? What do you like about those games and characters?
Right now I just bought The Simpsons game, so I really dig that. I'd also have to say UT is also a big favorite, but I'm awful at it. The Simpsons is easy - since I can't commit the time to a more challenging, more exciting game, I get the entertainment I need from it. UT is a great game all around, and it's actually pretty fucking funny. [As for] Characters: I like Sniperwolf from Metal Gear, she's sexy for sure...and Rayne is pretty iconic in my book.
What game(s) do you kickass in?
Tetris, yeah I know I'm not great at any of the intense games.
What do you like about gaming in general? Is it just a way to kill time? Does it relax you? What other activities would you compare gaming to?
It's another form of entertainment for me - yes, it's definitely relaxing...unless you are trying to beat a level and it takes you forever! You can't compare gaming to anything else, that's why it is so popular.
Have you ever wanted to play the role of the voice or model for a game character?
It would be pretty dope to be a Tomb Raider, or Resident Evil type-character. Fuck it, let's go all the way: they put Jenna in GTA VC, why not put me in the GTA universe somewhere? But I'd have to be able to kick some ass...strapped with two MP5K's and a black and grey skintight outfit.
Why do you think gaming is traditionally more popular with men? Also: this has changed a great deal in the last 5 years with the number of girl gamers increasing by leaps and bounds every year - do you think there's a specific reason for that? One theory is girls are playing games to get closer to boys, do you think that could be true?
I think the target consumer was men and boys; like children's toys there's always something different for each sex - in the gaming world, it wasn't always like that. The "battle" type games were directed toward men, and the "easier" games were for both crowds, or more of a family audience. Not all of us like droll over...back in the day I was pretty damn good at Red Dead Revolver.
Video games, like so much mainstream media, have a disproportionate amount of violent content compared to sexual content. If a game receives a "Mature" rating, you can be sure it's for the violence, not the sex - if a game has sexual content, it's risking an "Adult's Only" rating, which many outlets will not even carry. Why do you think violence is socially acceptable entertainment in American culture, but sex is still considered taboo?
Who's to say? America is a country founded by violence and bloodshed, not art and beauty - even though during 1960's and 70's there seemed to be this feeling of openness toward sex. Just look at the cinema of the day: Hollywood actors weren't afraid to be nude or do love scenes. But I guess we couldn't make that last through to today. I find myself more interested in the sexy game characters, don't you? Besides, why can't there be XXX Leisure Suit Larry? He sure deserves it after all these years trying to get some...
