With a few choice exceptions in most video games, men are still the driving force of most major heroes (and villains) of games, both online and off. With World of Warcraft, you have the King of Stormwind, Thrall, Illidan, the Lich King, and many other heroes and bad guys that are, well, guys.

Sure, you have Jane Proudmoore, the wife of Thrall that no one cares about and a few other females, but let's be honest here. You're not playing the game, especially for lore's sake, because of them.

That trend follows in other games as well, both old and new. Outside of the shining examples made in Portal and perhaps Metroid, there are very few female figures to be looked up too that aren't basically stereotypes in pink (sorry Princess Toadstool) and/or your overtly sexual, boss

Being a girl gamer is different from playing a female character. Gosh! This is a challenging experience. We all know that being a real life female gamer will end of most commonly called “Special Treatment” among all mankind.

Why? In reality, sometimes, we, girls are told that we can’t or shouldn’t play MMORPGs and other video games because it’s not our line, and so we are rare if we, girls, do.

I am an avid online gamer for more than 5 years in my life. I love role playing games because I can customize my character which reflects to my personality and what type of person I wanted to be. My favorite part in playing Online game is the fashion / costume stuff. That's what makes me feel cool... and I know girls do the same.

Female gamers are on a rise, so I'm not surprised with the recent research done by American Association for the Advancement of Science, which said more girls are apparently gaming online nowadays and they are also more hardcore when they are at it than guys.

it was revealed that the interest in online games has increased significant in women, and they also spend more time gaming. The study was done in the MMO EverQuest II. Why they didn't choose WoW with a wider range of players is unknown. Here is a snip:

"Players who played the game with their romantic partners enjoyed the game more and spent more time playing," says Scott Caplan, one of the co-authors of the study and a professor of communication at the University of Delaware. He also noted that the study raises more questions for future research into gender stereotypes and cautioned that their results shouldn't be generalized yet. "Some interesting points out of this is:

The National Science Foundation has given UC Irvine $100,000 to figure out why Americans go to greater lengths than the Chinese to modify “World of Warcraft,” the hugely popular multiplayer online game produced by Blizzard Entertainment of Irvine.

About 5 million Chinese play “WoW,” which is twice the number of American players. But Americans produce far more modifications, or “mods,” to enrich the gaming experience.

“We are examining the many reasons for this disparity, including cultural and institutional factors,” says Bonnie Nardi, the UCI informatics professor who’ll conduct the study with help from doctoral student Yong Ming Kow.

Nardi is a WoW fan who has already done lots of cultural research on a game that has 10 million players worldwide. As I noted in an earlier post, she spent time last year observing WoW gamers in the Internet cafes of Beijing. She explained her observations in an e-mail, saying:

A recent patch to Funcom's Age of Conan game resulted in the involuntary reduction in size of character model assets - specifically, the breast size of female characters.

As reported by Kotaku, Funcom has responded to complaints from forum users.

"Funcom can confirm that some of the female models in the game have had the size of their breasts changed. This is due to an unintended change in data that was introduced in an earlier patch - data which controls the so-called morph values associated with character models and the size of their respective body parts," the company said in a statement.



"We are working on a fix for this and your breasts should be back to normal soon."
