Last week, THQ announced that they are working on a sequel to their console FPS title Homefront. The high-profile video game publisher, perhaps most famous for publishing the WWE SmackDown! vs. RAW franchise, has announced that the team developing the new Homefront title is none other than Crytek, developers of the legendary FPS Crysis.

"Selecting Crytek to take Homefront forward underscores our strategy of working with the industry's best talent," said Danny Bilson, EVP Core Games, THQ. "Homefront's unique setting and storyline captivated gamers the world over. With Crytek's industry leading technology and legendary experience in the FPS genre, we're supremely confident that the next Homefront will deliver that AAA-quality experience that players demand."

Crysis Final System Requirements

Updated - YouGamers visited Crytek to check out their heavily anticipated DX10-showcase title Crysis, courtesy of Electronic Arts. A full preview article on the game is coming soon, but the most important piece of news from the visit is the official word on the final system requirements for Crysis.

Crytek states that the minimum system is as follows, depending on the operating system

Windows XP

Intel Pentium 4 2.8GHz (or similar AMD)

1024MB RAM

a 256MB Shader Model 3.0-compatible video card

12GB disk space

Windows Vista

Intel Pentium 4 3.2GHz (or similar AMD)

1536MB RAM

a 256MB Shader Model 3.0-compatible video card

12GB disk space

A 256MB SM3.0 card would probably translate to something like an NVIDIA GeForce 6800 GT or ATI Radeon X1650 series . According to Crytek, a system meeting the minimum requirements will run the game at 800x600 using low/medium settings.

Recommended setup is:

Windows XP/Vista

Intel Core 2 Duo E6400 or AMD Athlon X2 4400+

2048MB RAM

NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GTS 640MB

12GB disk space

Windows XP, using DX9 is limited to "high" graphical settings, while Windows Vista, using DX10, can be set to "very high". According to Crytek the recommended sys

In Crysis, German developer Crytek has one of the most visually stunning show pieces to advertise its CryEngine 2 game engine. However, when compared to Epic Games' widely licensed Unreal Engine 3, CryEngine 2 has found relatively few takers. Currently, only a few non-Crysis projects are using the technology, such as the mystery games being developed at Crytek's Kiev and Budapest studios, as well as a handful of smaller titles such as MindArk's Entropia Universe.

However, that small group grew by one today, as XLGames announced that it will use Crytek's second-generation game engine for its as-yet-unnamed upcoming massively multiplayer online role-playing game. Established in Seoul, South Korea, in 2003, XLGames was founded by former executive VP of development at NCsoft and creator of Lineage Jake Song. No details on the game have yet emerged.

XLGames' upcoming MMORPG won't be the first time Song and other NCsoft alum have worked with Crytek's middleware solution. Previously, the group worked on NCsoft's upcoming fantasy MMORPG Aion: Tower of Eternity, which uses Crytek's original CryEngine. Aion is slated for release in 2008.
