Breaking 'Dawn': Mortal Online announces expansion

It's the dawn of a new era -- and considering all of the bloodshed that goes on in Mortal Online, you may even call this a... Red Dawn? Wolverines? OK, sorry, but we had to get past the obvious puns.

Mortal Online's been on the down-low ever since last year's launch, but that doesn't mean that the Star Vault devs were sipping piña coladas on a gore-soaked beach. On the contrary, as the team's been hard at work on a new expansion that was revealed in its full glory earlier this week: Mortal Online: Dawn.

Instead of focusing on a new continent or a higher level cap, Dawn's adding several quality-of-life features to the game. These include an updated mount system that will eventually let you breed your ideal stud or mare, a cooking profession for the gourmet chefs out there, health

Now is your chance as the open beta for Mortal Online starts today.  To go along with the open beta, a new trailer was also released.

For those of you unaware, Mortal Online is a first person fantasy MMORPGs and is geared more towards the hardcore crowd as PvP will be the main focus of the game. You can go here to signup for the open beta, however be aware the server is located in Stockholm, Sweden, so there might be lag issues for some.  There is also a limit to the amount of players that will be able to join the beta on a first come first serve basis, so hurry up and signup if you’re interested.

In case you haven't kept up, Mortal Online has recently opened up a preview for their Game Shop where they intend to sell their copies of Mortal Online as digital, boxed, and limited edition copies. The limited edition copies, referenced as the Full Loot Bags, come with a number of goodies as well as access to the beta. Only 999 Full Loot Bags will be sold, and the very first of these to be printed and packaged will be very special.

Unfortunately, the time to attempt to get your hands on this amazing offer has passed, but the results are in. This first copy was auctioned off over eBay. The auction lasted for two days and, in just the first three hours, had risen to $2,000 USD. It finally ended earlier today at $5,100 USD.  100% of the proceeds from this auction is being donated to Doctors Without Borders.

Mortal Online is an up and coming MMORPG aiming to bring the gaming genre back to freedom and the kind of complexity a gamer can really appreciate. Mixing the mechanics that made Ultima Online such a great MMORPG with the mechanics that make Mount & Blade such a fantastic indie-Action-Strategy-RPG, as well as taking inspiration from the

My Last Hope: Mortal Online

My last hope for Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Games is Mortal Online; I've lost faith in everything else...

Mortal online

Every game since EverQuest has followed the same basic formula: Levels with caps that constantly rise, PVP that is neither free or risky, PVE that is more grind than game, gear that requires certain stats and levels, skills that players instantly become capable of performing at certain levels, and all the boring fetch and kill quests that have become the staple vehicle for moving players through a cardboard plot that boasts YOU to be the hero of the game... Alongside millions of other heroes equally important and heroic and, oddly enough, on all the same quests as you.

I'm sure most of you are quite afraid of having your game any other way, but I've come from a different era in gaming than you have--not all of you, thankfully, but most of you. Let me take you back to where it all began for me...

I remember my first MMO; Ultima Online. Back then, Ultima Online was absolutely stunning.

Ultima Online: The Second Age cover

I knew of Meridian 59 before it but didn't try it until afterwards, but it just didn't compare. Ultima Online was a game where you could do anything you wanted, and that

Star Vault recently got back from our booth at one of the world’s largest marketing events for games, the Leipzig Game Convention, Germany. The main reason for the trip was to step up our marketing efforts and spread the word about Mortal Online.

The feedback on what was shown in our booth was very positive. A number of Mortal Online followers from our online forum showed up to visit us, and we got to meet a lot of new forum candidates and potential players. We also did quite a few interviews for magazines, radio, TV and web, both on- and offline. What surprised us most was the number of publishers interested in Mortal Online, and although we are still planning to release the game ourselves we look forward to have a closer look at their different offers.

All in all, the trip was over our expectations, but we’re happy to back home to continue working on the game.

For the first time ever we at Star Vault are proud to announce the title of our project: Mortal Online!

It is a very exciting day for everyone involved in this project and we have had some stressful but rewarding days prior to this release. We are very pleased to introduce you to the first teaser of Mortal Online as well as our official homepage and our forums. In the forums you will be able to discuss everything regarding the game, and don’t forget to subscribe to our newsletter, that way you will stay up to date on the progress of the game!

Each month we will release as much information as we are able to. This information will concern features, screenshots, races and classes and much more. Every so often we will also try to absorb what is said in the forums and what result the surveys display. Some great ideas might even make their way into the game itself!

I hope you are as excited as we are about Mortal Online and that you will follow us through the journey of development!
