JRPG Monogatari: Discussing battle Systems
By: Tipamari in defaultposted at 3:52 am Apr 14,2011 - 2

Battle systems are what make the majority of gameplay in a JRPG, aside from running around entire countries and doing tedious mini games and side quests. There are so many different aspects to look at when looking over a game and ironically actual gameplay is given a stool in the corner. A good story is important, but this would all be moot without a great battle system. Aside from good natural puzzles and court room dramas, the games I play usually contain good natured battles and bloody combat, which is the format for almost all action games.
Turn-based combat is the traditional format for the majority of JRPGs. From its humble beginnings in original Dragon Quest all the way to other games in the family, turn-based combat has had its fair run through multiple systems. Aside from tra

Adolescence is one experience we all can relate to in one way or another. Stories abound about this, the most awkward time of life, but never have I seen it so vivid than in JRPGs. Most take on the classic plot line: adolescent male leaves a familiar surrounding for a bigger life. You can’t throw a rock in the JRPG section of your favourite video game store without hitting a game with this sort of hero. So why are they so widely used, and what makes them interesting even after all this time? Most main characters in JRPGS very rarely reach past eighteen. They find themselves answering the call to adventure at a very young age. We have to suspend our disbelief with more than just the heroes of these games, since their worlds are filled with magic and wonder which we ar

Hello everyone. This here is my first column here as a part of the Quest! team. I’m going to be here writing weekly columns regarding anything and everything about the JRPG. Although I do play MMOGs, I’m very much an avid JRPGist. I study Japanese at university, a major which I believe relates to my love of Japanese RPGs, with my other major, English Literature, relating to my love of stories. I think the JRPG is a perfect story telling device just as much as any book or movie, and will be discussing these sorts of points in my columns, but I believe gameplay is just as important as well. I hope to cover as many bases as I can, covering the perspectives of a gamer, a reader, and a Japanophile. But, without further ado. Minna san, kore kara mo yoroshiku onegai shimasu!

Final Fantasy XIII-2 Announced
By: Mandifesto in defaultposted at 11:05 am Jan 19,2011 - 3

I'm not sure how to feel about this, but yesterday Square Enix announced they are working on Final Fantasy XIII-2. It's not a huge surprise, for a couple of reasons. First, they had registered a domain name for FFXIII 2 just a couple of days ago, but this isn't the first time they've done sequels to main titles in the series. I rather enjoyed the little romp that was FFX2, but mostly because it had a rather satisfying ending when you managed to reach the perfect one (took me three tries, I'll grant you, but I finally got it.)
Heck, this particular game world is pretty crowded with Versus and Type-0 (formerly Agito) out there floating around in the cosmos, and now there'll be a sequel to the main title as well. That's four games in the suite,

MMOSite’s Quest! Reviews Final Fantasy XIII
By: Dimsum_Queen in defaultposted at 10:48 am Jun 05,2010 - 6

When I watched my husband play FFXIII, I was intimidated by the gameplay and disappointed at how slow the plot crawls by. Now playing it myself, the game doesn't feel slow at all. From Lake Bresah onwards, as soon as you learn the paradigms system, the whole game goes by really quick. Before I knew
