Melee is better than cannons for:

1. rare item hunting

You can only plunder rare items though melee combat.

2. privateering to plunder

You can steal goods with cannons when you privateer PC, but you can only steal items with plunder.

3. last longer to grind

Because you can steal food/water as you grind, you can keep grinding as long as you do not keep losing your sailors.

4. big advantages for 1on1 in PvP

In 1on1, the opponent has no way to heal their sailors while doing melee. It takes so much time to heal up sailors after retreating.

5. Lower cost on items

The durability of cannons can really go down fast. Whereas, melee goods last quite long. (and generally cheaper as long as you do not go for very expensive melee items)

Storage is probably one of the most underrated skills in the game. I say that because most people see Storage as a skill that turns various Fish caught on the sea into Fish Meat. But many people probably wont know that Storage has also two very important Passive Components to it in addition to its Active Component of preserving Fish and Food.

Cannons are the most sought after item for soldiers and pirates alike.
A good set of cannons will tear through enemies and players alike, and a master Cannon smith is a profession every guild needs.
However crafting Cannons is a labor intensive job. Most of the high-end Cannons require a lot of raw material, which can only be obtained from a handful of Ports.
These Ports, (Hamburg and Barcelona become well known as Cannon exporting Ports, and players from all over the world travel to these Ports to purchase freshly made Cannons from players.

This is Starcrossed guide for sewing and probably the hardest to do if you are from south Europe. I do not plan to do this but making sails is very rare and difficult task. You can also use this skill to make various costumes. Once you can make sails you can sell them for a very very high income probably the highest of all crafting skills so its a good investment
