Recently Trion Worlds announced that the server transfer system will go live soon, its not a matter of ‘what if’ anymore. I don’t know if this is going to be a new feature that mmos need to have in the future to be successful like mounts, addons, balance and content, but I am under the impression that some people in the industry really want to give players more features…

The problem is that this new feature can be improved even more, I don’t see the point of free character transfers if the developers can change the server structure to follow the one used in other games with one big server divided in instances.

If my perceptions are not wrong, all I see in free server transfers is a guild wars style instancing but with the ability to change from instance every week and not every 5 minutes. The second option sounds a bit better because sometimes I can wait 5 minutes to do something but not a whole week…

Sometimes I feel that the whole multi servers structure is obsolete, there is new ways to go around the high population and lag problems this days, you can assign more blades to an instance or you can make multiple versions of the same game world, you can also help the players by making a system that cut away certain players like, non group or guild people...

Sometimes I feel that the whole multi server structure is simply a remnant of the shortcomings that the mmo genre had in the early days.

I only a have a few words to the Rift developers:

Dear Trion Worlds.

Please!!! Drop this free weekly transfers structure and build up a big ultra server that let everyone play in it with a few instances of the whole game world in case one of them gets full…

I know you guys want to make a good game for the whole community but why take this conformist option called transfers when something bigger can be achieve for the greater good.
