When leveling in an MMORPG, your main goal is to reach a level cap that will enable the endgame content. Some MMORPGs, however, do not have a fixed level cap. Does this idea work?

When I began playing Black Desert, I was slightly skeptical about my leveling being slightly purposeless due to not seeing the end of it. As most of you probably know, there are soft level caps in BDO, but there isn't actual maximum level cap, although later on it will take ages to level up.

As game developers strive to bring innovational game mechanics, they often feel the need to get rid of traditional MMORPG elements, but this does not always work well. Leveling, nowadays, is often seen as something that players tend to rush through and attempt to speed up by various exploits, but the whole purpose of leveling is still present and that is to achieve a certain level cap that will open up a whole new world of endgame PvE and PvP content.

It seems to me, that when an MMORPG does not have an assigned level cap, players get confused and even lose interest after a while because there is no end to their journey, they lack a destination to arrive at. For this reason, I believe that even though developers constantly strive to be innovational and create something unique, there are certain MMORPG elements that should remain untouched.  A level cap has always been a major goal that players want to achieve and by implementing infinite leveling the whole MMORPG can lose purpose.

There are, however, certain games where this infinite progression actually works well, such as EVE, but that particular game is definitely not a traditional MMORPG in many aspects. Lineage 1, if I remember well, also had a certain limitless leveling system, but that game is currently only available on private servers.

Do you guys feel the same way about the frustrations of not having a fixed level cap, or do you prefer its uniqueness?
