...a little story of my childhood…

The year: 1996. For me, it was the first time using a computer, a brand new (and quite expensive) thing at the time, especially in my country. With the Sound Blaster sound card came a cd with a bunch of games on it, including both Ultima Underworld and Ultima VII, among others.

When I tried Ultima VII: The Black Gate, I instantly knew that the game in front of my eyes was something ahead of its time. And to this day, I still consider it. No other RPG managed to capture a world in such a realistic and detailed way, ever.

Ultima Online was one of the first online games I played, and I'm still fond of it. While I can't force myself to play it currently, since it hasn't aged well in my eyes, I still consider it the best sandbox MMO out there, and with good reason.

The Avatar was well known as the first troll in existence.

...fast-forward to the present…

Shroud of the Avatar is an upcoming MMORPG designed by, among others, Richard Garriot, the original creator of the world of Britannia, and he plans to make it the "spiritual successor of the Ultima series".

The story is written by Tracy Hickman, one of the creators of the Dragonlance saga, and my personal favorite of the genre, so this is pretty much a matchmaking heaven for me!

Well… the drama behind SotA is a bumpy one, particularly led by the fact that it has been crowd founded, and therefore, the developers got corrupted by greed, as it tends to happen with this system. I'm not going to enter that discussion because we could fill a million pages with it, so I'll just say that you can "support" the game with your precious moneyz, and you may have a chance to try it out. So basically, you're paying dreams - and hookers and coke for the developers, of course.

So if you're like me and like to play the games you buy, you'll just stay away from this thing until something is definitive.

But wait, we're in luck! Because from today, July 3rd through July 26th, the game has an available free trial, with a series of limitations. You can read them here, and you will also be able to create an account and download the game from the very same site.

Currently, I don't know much about the game except that is something like a combination of sandbox and theme park, but the idea of reliving my Ultima experience is too tempting to let it pass, so I'll just download this thing and try it out.

I'll be back in a couple of days to share my thoughts!
