Why is it that one generation does not understand the next generation's entertainment?
If you do research, you find out that in the past every new type of entertainment that came out was the new scapegoat for the problems with youth and for people getting lazier.
When books first came out they were blamed for causing violence and making people sit around, then comic books, then television, then movies, then video games. One generation always blames the next generation's entertainment, without growing up with it it's hard for them to understand it.
People always claim it is getting more realistic and therefore is the cause for problems in the world. There has always been violence, crime, war, murder, terrible things. These things are not getting worse because of entertainment, we just now have the ability to report on them from anywhere in the world much more quickly.
And honestly, the places with the most horrific violence in the world that actually is increasing, they do not have the same entertainment that we do. They don't have many movies, they don't have many games. They don't have an outlet for the violence and frustration other than taking it out in real.
I hope that those of us playing video games now that see how the games get blamed for problems in the world do not in turn blame the next generation's entertainment after us. Whatever it is, it's going to be more realistic, more involved, but the reality is sane people can tell the difference between a fantasy world and the real world. I love violent games, the more blood the better. I love violent movies, watching people get ripped apart, guts flying. But I know it's entertainment, I know it's fake. It hasn't made me less sensitive to these things in real. When I see real violence, when I see real death and pictures of real people torn up, I get sick and want to puke and just want to get the image out of my mind. I know the difference between fantasy and reality, and no amount of fantasy violence and death has made real violence and death any less tramatic and terrible for me.
There are always going to be those that can't tell the difference between fantasy and reality, but if anything entertainment delays their sick actions rather than makes them worse. In the old days, they would have taken out their sick violence by torturing little animals and such before moving up to other things. Now days they do it in a game instead, and they use that as the outlet to their sick minds rather than hurting something real. The problem is there are bad, evil, sick people in the world who want to do wrong. Entertainment doesn't make these people, they seek out the more violent things because that is their nature and they'd be doing it no matter if games existed or not.
It can not be stopped though, it will always continue. Some more involved entertainment will come out that beams a signal directly into our brains and makes it look as if we are really there in a virtual world. People who grew up on games and had to suffer others telling us how bad games are for us when we know that's not true, will then turn around and be saying "Wow that's much more realistic, that's dangerous and breeding violence!" We will never learn. We will continue to blame the next generation's entertainment that we don't grow up with. We will get older and change and won't understand the next type of entertainment that comes out after ours that we didn't grow up with.
Such is human nature. Human nature sucks :D
