Echo of Soul Online English version has been launched recently. The game is developed by Korean game developer Nvius and published in North America and Europe by Aeria Games. The game has been heavily publicized; chances are you have seen the commercials of the game before in the internet. I have recently tried the Chinese version of the game, which was launched by Chang You last year. This is a my first impression review on the chinese version of the game (although the game has been out for awhile but this is the first time i played it).
The game allows you to choose between one of the 6 classes, namely Warrior, Archer, Rogue, Guardian, Sorceress and Warlock (not released in English version yet). At level 10, you will be able to choose one of the 2 specializations in the skill tree for each class. For example, Guardian can choose Stormguard, which is more offensive, or Earthguard which is more defensive in nature. The Cash Shop sells an item which allow you to switch between both specializations. Apparently, there are no dedicated healing class in the game. Players choose either to play a tanker or a damage dealer.
The combat system is the old-school point-and-click type. Most skills require you to have a target before you can cast them, although there are a few AOE skills which you can use without targeting. Although you cannot really perform much evasive movement in the game (at least at lower level), timely casting of special skills allows you to interrupt the skill casting of certain enemies' attack.
Basic skills allow you to gain MP (i am not sure the exact term given to the English version of the game) when you land hits on enemies. Higher damage skills on the other hand, will consume MP before it can be cast. The effect of the skills varies depending on the MP as well, for example dealing higher damage for each MP consumed.
One of the key characteristics for the game is the Soul System. Every time you defeat a monster, you will gain a Soul, which can be consumed to cast special buff skills, Soul Skills. There are 4 Soul Skills: namely Hope, Innocence, Courage and Peace. For example, Courage Soul grants 16% attack increase and 20% attack & casting speed increase for 20sec. On the other hand, Peace Soul grants 30% max HP increase and grant immunity to all disabling effects. The type of Soul skills can be preset and changed anytime depending on the situation. All Soul Skills share a cool down of 120sec, and increase the experience gain by 20%. They also consume 2 corresponding souls.
The game is recommended for players who enjoy the traditional Korean-style MMORPG's, such as Lineage and Silk Road Online. However, personally, I don't fancy the point-and-click combat system, probably because i am too used to action combat of Dragon Nest and Blade & Soul Online. The graphics for Echo of Soul is subpar as compared to the latest MMORPG's as well, such as Black Desert Online or Moonlight Blade. The high number of portals connecting different small zones/areas are quite annoying as well; i personally very much prefer a larger world instead.
