Battleborn has finally decided to go free-to-play after just 1 year of its release over on Steam and Xbox one, while the game isn't exactly bad in any sense, I think it's original price tag may have been a little too high, and releasing it on the same month of Overwatch was definitely a terrible idea which no doubt aided in the game heavily dropping in players.

It's definitely unfortunate to what happened to Battleborn, the game had both PvP and a pretty decent PvE to really cater to both types of players. The game should of been alive and doing well if it either released several months before Overwatch, or more preferably some months after Overwatch instead, much like with how Paladins officially released onto steam and is currently going on very strong for a free-to-play hero shooter.

Both games are hero mobas in their own way, the real difference is that Overwatch had such a massive amount of hype going around it with its gameplay, quirky characters, lore and the graphics style to really shine the game out, Battleborn was just kind of on the side lines with what simply looked to be a fun game with an unfortunate similar style of game, but without all the lore and unfortunately an art style that while it's nice, having a bunch of skills go off all in 1 area just looked like a bit of a mess.

So, Battleborn has released their F2P version of the game that will work like many other free moba style games will, that being a rotating set of heroes you can play in all the PvP modes and maps for free, while the PvE mode will be locked until bought with in-game currency or real money.

Here's some info about what you can buy and how as quoted from their steampage here:

Played it, loved it, want more? We got you. Players can unlock heroes, customizations for your favorite hero, experience boosters, or even the Story Mode Operations in the Marketplace individually. In the Marketplace, you’ll find a number of items that can be purchased with Credits earned in-game or Platinum premium currency including:

Battleborn Heroes
Cosmetics skins and taunts
Gear packs
XP and Loot Boosters
Additional Loadouts and Bank pages
Story Operations, individually or as part of the Season Pass bundle
Battle Passes to access private matches

Players can also head to either digital or retail stores to upgrade to the full game and unlock all 25 base characters, all eight Story Mode missions and the Prologue, as well as permanent access to private matches. Upgrading is seamless and any player going from the Free Trial to the full game will receive in-game credits for any duplicated content that was purchased a la carte. Additionally, character challenges and masteries will carry over with the upgrade, and players will be granted access to earn the character masteries that are only available through Story Mode missions."

Anyone that purchased the game before the 6th of June will receive a founders pack bonus containing the following things:

- 1,000 Platinum
- 50,000 Credits
- Exclusive “Founder” player title
- Gold skins for Mellka and Deande
- 5 Core Loot Packs
- 1 of each Command Faction Pack (5 total)
- 1 Exclusive “Founder Loot Pack” that includes…
1 guaranteed piece of legendary gear
1 guaranteed piece of legendary boss gear
2 guaranteed pieces of common (or better) gear
- Guaranteed exclusive legendary “Shard of Solus” gear item (a 0 activation cost LLC Shard Generator)
- 4 guaranteed Flair items including exclusive “Founder’s Crown” Flair item

The game will have a new matchmaking system called the "Novice queue" to help new players get into the game and prevent them from being matched with any seasoned players to create a bad experience, and most importantly the game will have a training mode for the incursion, and another mode to simply try every character for free and see how they play before committing to buying them.

Battleborn should be a pretty solid free-to-play title overall, it just needs a re-invigorated playerbase to really bring it back to life and get it to where it should be, it has a pretty solid amount of content for a now free-to-play game and PvE players should be happy with the game once they unlock the PvE mode, I would say that it's unfortunate that they have locked that part of the game out and not instead just enabled the first part of the PvE mission to hook those players in, I don't think that they should be locking out such a thing to help alienate such a large group of players, even if they are technically able to just buy it straight away or buy the game as a whole.
