WHY FREE 2 PLAY IS NOT THE FUTURE FOR AAA MMOS

Every day when I read comments on an MMORPG related video, I hear people say "Free 2 Play is the future." However, If you look at the current state of the industry, there is not one AAA MMORPG that launched as Free 2 Play.

To expand on this, we have to take a look at MMOs that people often tie to the Free 2 Play model, but were not Free 2 Play at launch and are not even Free 2 Play now. Games like Age of Conan, Lord of the Rings Online, DC Universe Online, and Star Wars the Old Republic are not Free 2 Play titles, but rather Freemium titles and were Pay 2 Play at launch. So what is the difference between Free 2 Play and Freemium?

Free 2 Play means that all content is unlocked to the player, with no barrier or additional DLC required to maximize the content of said game. In each of the cases above, there are DLC tied to expanding the level cap and content of each game. Behold the Freemium model.

When Neverwinter Online was originally announced in late 2010, I was indeed a skeptic. Not because of the universe, but how Cryptic would execute it without another cookie cutter MMO being released. Then when it was announced Free 2 Play I was even more skeptical because the name Perfect World was attached too it.

As many of you know, Perfect World is known for heavy item mall games that require either a lot of grinding, or a lot of real money to progress your character. With only a couple Perfect World published games that don't have a heavy reliance to their item malls, it was a roll of the dice for a Neverwinter MMO published by the notorious company.
