Over the last couple of years gaming has shown a boom in growth. Games have gotten flashier and with more bangs for bucks...but in all of this I somtimes wonder if somehtng has been lost. Despite this boom, despite all the great DX 10 enabled grpahics... I still find myself playing games as old as Wing Commander, Master of Orion etc. (Dosbox ftw!!!)
The problem I think lies in how studios today are more concerned with feeding everyone the same slosh they have for the last 5-6 year (look at the number of WW II shooter, stategy games etc etc.). This makes sense economically, I mean a well established formula or IP does not require much new creativity or backstory (remember the big carboard boxes with large manual that used to come with the games with a story and character description to rival a novel?) and all that needs to be done is upgrade the engine to run with the latest technology on the market, add a few new units or weapons; maybe a few tweaks in gameplay and PRESTO a new game.
