I know “Dota style games” is not the proper term, and I know there is one. I just can’t think of it at the moment, and well, shush. This is a discussion topic, not a pick on Zevri’s wording, post.
First let me say I have never played Dota. I have only played the games with the same style such as League of Legends and Heroes of Newerth. But I have had an on and off again addiction with LoL, a re-occurring one that has had me hooked on and off again from the game since it was in beta. I play it, get friends to play with me in it, we team up and stay addicted, and then we get bored, move on and eventually come back. I mean the game is repetitive to a fault. You are on the same maps, doing the same thing over and over. Yes, there is a variety of champions to choose from, tactics to try out and things like that, but in essence it is the same repetitive game. But what draws us to these games?
My best guess is that it is a mix of factors. If you have friends who play, that is a major one as having friends in a game makes even the most boring and menial of things fun. There is also the constant fluctuation of skill levels of players in an almost purely pvp skill based game. (I say almost since minions are involved.) This keeps your interest and wanting to learn more to do better. I’ve seen this in how my friends want to do match after match to try out a new champion and learn how to use them; I am guilty of the same thing.
And as such I continue this tango of sorts, battling my addiction and fun I have with the game. Will I quit it again? Most likely. Will I come back again if I do? Probably.
For you guys and gals what attracts you, or turns you off to this style of games? If you’re playing one, which one is your current addiction?
