Vanguard F2P details, more freemium than free

For those who haven't heard, Sony's MMO Vanguard Saga of Heroes, is switching over to the F2P model, like oh so many before it. It was announced that it would make the switch about a month ago, but earlier yesterday they came in with an update (you can see the post here) :

_______________________________________________________________

Hello fellow Telonians!

It’s been a few months since my last Producer letter, but I’m happy to announce that we’re approaching the final stretch of our free-to-play conversion – or as we call it, Free to Play. Your Way. As a company, we’re focused on giving players choices so we’re thrilled to be this much closer to offering our players even more flexibility with their gameplay experiences.

Over the past few months, you’ve probably noticed a significant in

Phantasy Star Online 2 Open Beta Starts

Register | Download

Not sure how many of you are fans of Phantasy Star, but I have been since around the Dreamcast era. As servers have shut down, and even private servers rise, I have still been a fan on the series. Now the latest in the series, which is Phantasy Star Online 2 has made it out of closed beta and Pre-Open Beta, to finally get in the Open Beta stage. The catch? It is in Japan only, so if you want to play it badly enough, you will need to sign up for a Japanese Sega Online ID and download a game you may not be able to read.

People who have played any of the series already know what to expect, but for those of you who are new to the whole Phantasy Star deal, it is an Action RPG which plays in instance/mission based gameplay. It allows you to go through instances with friends

Dragon Age Legends converts to offline

Homesite

Okay, for those familiar with it, Dragon Age Legends was a rendition of the Dragon Age Franchise, it was F2P and was played through Facebook with friends. The game seemed alright, but really wasn't my cup of tea, mostly since I don't log into Facebook unless it is for a promotion for an online game I play. Because of that, I didn't get very far in the game and didn't see as much of the world as I would have liked.

But, why am I rambling about my experience it it? Simply because it relates to the news for this game. They decided to end the online portion of this game and bring it to being a offline version that players can download for free and explore again in their new offline adventure. The game is free to download from the link above, and requires Adobe Air to run. The gam

The Old Republic is looking at F2P model

They're doing it earlier and earlier now aren't they? An article over at gamestm has some news from the lead designer of Bioware's mmo Star Wars The Old Republic. If you completely missed the title, or tone of the article, well the news is that they're looking at giving the game a F2P model. Part of the reason is because of the stiff competition they have been getting from their free to play counterparts, which admittedly are getting better over the years, especially with a lot of the former P2P games making the conversion to attract more players.

How will they do this? This isn't in the article and the only thing I saw from a quick search in Google is the predictions of many that the game would go f2p (dating from around January). My hope is more of the micro tr

Skyrim: Dawnguard Trailer

I know not very "befitting" of a blog on mmosite, since well, it isn't an mmo. But it is a game I love going back to as much as I did with Oblivion and Morrowind. Which since it is something I am interested in, and this is my blog, you do the match.

Back onto the subject at hand, as most Skyrim players should know of the announcement of Dawnguard, the first DLC for Skyrim, which promises to be more on the lines of Shivering Isles than Horse Armor (for those of you who played Oblivion).  Earlier they announced the DLC, but all that came with the announcement was a single picture with the Dragonborn and the Dawnguard name on it. This time we actually get a trailer to look at to see what it may bring.

From the trailer, it seems to add two faction, and even a possible new transformation beyond the Vampire and Werewolves that are already present in the game. Going by some of the video in the game it seems like the first faction that is introduced are followers of Molag Bal, which

Humble Indie Bundle V is out

Website

Yes, fellow gamers, Humble Indie Bundle V is out, the pay what you want platform that gets you games as you pay however much you want to get games and give to charity or the developers if you so choose. Unlike the IndieGala Bundle which offers like twelve games, this bundle only includes five at the moment, but they're pretty good.

As I said it is a pay-what-you-want model, for those of you who saw my previous posts on these bundles, you know this and can skip this paragraph. For those of you who are new to this, it means what it sounds like. You set the price you want to pay, and you get games. Though they did implement a $1 minimum if you want to get a steam key, but if you do under that, you don't get that warm fuzzy feeling from helping charity and still getting th

Indiegala V is LIVE.

Homesite

IndieGala has done it again, more games for you to get with the ability to get some Karma for the games you "bought" rather cheap. Well let me get a bit more in detail for those of you who are new to the whole bundle deal. IndieGala along with others like the HumbleBundle get games, OSTs, and other stuff from mostly indie devs who donate their games DRM free/on Steam to these bundles. The bundle is pay what to want (minimum of $1) to who you want (all to charity, devs, or split it). Which allows you to pick who the money goes to, which gives you a bit more freedom than buying them normally. They set the donation amount to a very resonable amount in which you get a lot of games for the fraction of what they would cost normally, with the added bonus of going to charity,

Creating The Story For The Elder Scrolls Online

Source

So for those interested in Elder Scrolls Online (including me), gameinformer(Who gets pretty much all the info) has a bit more news for the game, which includes of video interview on the making of the game, which gives a bit more detail on the setting and how they're going about things. Since the game is being developed by ZeniMax Online, which is actually the parent company of Bethesda, but the Bethesda team is not working on the game, which may create a bit of worry from fans, but it seems like they know what they're doing, despite me being fairly disappointed that the combat won't be the same as the previous installments of the franchise. For one the setting in the story is set in the second era, which is about a thousand years before the evens in Skyrim. Aeria Games Ignite Beta Launches

Link

Digital platforms are gaining in popularity, even more so are ones with a social twist. In the past Aeria Games along with a lot of others released downloaders for their games, some required you to log in while others didn't. They really didn't feel all that useful and more of a added thing you had installed that you really didn't need.  Aeria Games wants to do something a bit different and add a platform that allows you to download all of the games from their portal, and communicate with friends while your at it. Sort of like Steam; but without all of the features and the games are only ones that they host, but this also an opportunity for developers trying to get access to players for their games.

As put by them:

“Ignite was created by Aeria Games to provide a comprehensive
